Finally I got my UK-targeted gambling portal ready (the name is Mind The Bet), and I wanted to give it a shot by creating some PPC campaigns at Overture UK.
On a side note, I have been promoting non-gambling affiliate programs for a while via paid search campaigns, and that’s why I thought about trying it first.
I have created a listing for the term ‘online casino’ in Overture UK, and was at the first spot for about 48 hours. I paid more than $6 a click, and got a few hundrends of clicks. However, the results were awful: Only one free money sign-up (!). By looking at the logs, I could tell that most of the visits had no refferals and those who had, were usually reffered by websites that look to me like banner farms or those known arbitrage landing pages. Only a few of the clicks were reffered from uk.yahoo.com.
I have contacted Yahoo UK and they told me there is no way to opt-out from their partner traffic, and that each and every partner of them has been carefully selected..
I would be happy to hear from you guys about your experience with Overture UK, and also any tips about how can I start promoting my website in the PPC engines which accept gambling content.
Any other tips/suggestions about my website would be highly appreciated..!
Thank you in advance,
Eyal
In that case, how can I see at the top 5 positions at least 2 affiliate websites, paying about 2.5-3 GBP per click ?? Some of the sites have been there for months, so unless they are totally stupid, I can’t see why they continue to run the listings if they are not profitable.
By the way, I also promote non-gambling affiliate programs (actually that is my main business) and I can say that although Adwords converts for me the best, I can also get nice conversions from Overture and Overture UK for my non-gambling sites. Also the fraud %% is low. However, it’s a another story with my gambling site – Mind The Bet..
1. you have to bid at least 1Ł to have some traffic.
2. They charged me nearly twice the ammount of traffic than I actually received.
3. When I complained and presented them my server log. they canned answer was that they have the best scam prevention system in place and therefore fraud cannot be possibile occur.
4. Bulk of the traffic came from Gasta Money where I have a frontpage ad for a year and never received a click. For the same keyword I received plenty of clicks from the 6. page on the same keyword. Other clicks came from spam sites and only a few from Yahoo.uk.
5. Only 1 or 2 visitors went beyond the landing page.
6. No conversion.
That’s my experince with them.
“In google usually one action/sale per 100 clicks is achieved whereas Yahoo may take 200 clicks.”
I am not entirely sure what the scientific basis for that claim was but it is very likely in my opinion. Overture seems to put the emphasis on making money rather than offering their partners and advertisers a good deal.
Squigley – Thank you, however, I have already opted-out from the Content Match – It’s a sure way to lose your money fast with a keyword such as ‘online casino’…
My problem is that even when the Advanced Match & Content Match are off, my ad shows on Yahoo partners (=websites with special agreements with Yahoo to show Yahoo ads) and to my surprise many of those “partners” are actually fraud sites. And Yahoo won’t let you opt out from these partners traffic…
I see it like a catch – you want to advertise at Yahoo UK ? Well, you must also advertise with our partners..
Anyone else can confirm this maybe?
I’m pretty sure you can turn off the websites part and just have the search results running. I’ll check it and get back to ya.
.. a little later..
yup. Under account, then account setup, then select off for content match adverts and submit.
I tried content match for non gambling related keywords and it was a disaster, with lots of clicks and no sales. I turned it off and just went with the se pages.
If you don’t have this option, then I guess you’ll just have to bid the minimum…
