I always thought it was mainly the title but could be wrong.

I never tested it.

But I doubt it make a different for text links.

But it very important for images … If you have an image as a link it is important to add an title=”abc” to it.

Now I can tell you even more … I think that adding title to your links specially in poker/casino niche … Can make Google to penalize your site for over on-page optimization. (I just stumble this in other poker site , not mine tho )

I recommend not to add title tags to your links.

Regards.

probably the weight is mainly on the title or on the title only.
Anyway I think it’s a good idea to incl. a title if the anchor is not perfect.

That is correct, as you can add a lot of links with title tags it could help you rank better but actually it is keyword stuffing which SE’s do not like at all. That is why title tags will help users not for the benefit of your SEO. I do not think you will get penalty for the title tag only for using a lot of alt tags for images with over 100 char.

why getting penalty for using a common html tag?
Maybe if you spam it and write casino 100 times in there.

I’d say that Google is aware of both attributes – and it would be damn stupid if they ignored one half of the information that they have about a link … but hey with Google anything is possible eh?
:roflmao:

I’ve also read in search engine forums about a theory on possible penalties – but frankly you can probably find a search engine theory on anything these days – and nobody writing in a forum really knows the exact truth about the algos.

It’s possible that someone got penalised or knocked down at the same time that they added titles – but it could have been a google algo change or for anyone of a hundred other onsite and/or offsite reasons and no-one will ever know.

But still – a new theory is born – and becomes internet myth.

Personally – I add titles to about 3/4 of my links on each page if I think they help define what is at the other end of the link.

As far as I know, title tag is of no use for SEO.
