Search Engines’ way to rank sites

cat asked 4 years ago
I open that thread to learn more about how search engines rank websites.

For example I have one site that has been no 1 for a term in google for about 3 months. I checked the ranking almost every day.

Some days ago my site dropped to no 11, today the site ranks no 9 for that term.

My sites are getting continusly more links through social bookmarks, articles, directories and link exchanges.

I read of the google algorythm. Almost 20 years ago I learned what an algorythm is. Can I define it as mathematic process?

I am wondering why my site dropped that many positions from one day to the other. I’d better understand a drop from 1 to 2 or position 3 in a time fram of one day.
Do search engines calculate their rankings daily?

Another thing I don’t understand why google gives gray PR to some of my inner pages.
Pages with unique written content from an expert writer.
Some of those content inner pages get PR some not. Sides that was added at the same time with unique content.

Absolutely – Google is constantly re-evaluating and calibrating the search results.
I also wouldn’t worry about the sudden drop in rankings, this is very common actually.

It will adjust itself gradually, just be sure that everything is in order, i mean you didn’t made any technical changes right?

You never know, one change in your robots.txt (If you have one) can seriously cause your rankings to drop.

You’ll need to review your internal linking structure.
Do some more internal linking between content pages. Add a link from your home page to a non PR page if it’s appropriate to do so for your readers.

Build more deep links to those specific pages.

Happens to my sites all the time, but the record traffic numbers are not coming back.

What is the best way to link your inner pages, full menu on each inner page or just a home link ?

what is better for SE’s casinocasino.com or casino-casino.com ?

Maybe some webmasters try to hurt your site by listing your site on spammy and adult sites. I have seen this several time but most of them post in a language i can not read.

How can one prevent this Bshit ?

Besides that I think for all keywords there are seasonal patterns so traffic can vary a lot.

In content links are much better than a menu link. For example, if the main keyword for your homepage was “Online Gambling” , then really anywhere you have an opportunity to link back to your homepage from a subpage using “Online Gambling” as your anchor text, then your doing good. If its in a paragraph thats even better. However you should also put your popular pages in a menu too if that makes sense, just in conjunction with your in paragraph links.

Many webmasters miss out on all the free links from their own website, they are consumed with getting them from other sites and forget about all the free ones right under their nose.

I’m not sure if this has been posted before, but when it comes to ranking factors, I recommend reading: http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors

In this example it wouldn’t really matter.
Do keep the hyphens to a minimum.

I wouldn’t worry about that, it wouldn’t have any effect.

I don’t think any link from another site to your site can hurt your rankings.
That wouldn’t make sense.
I guess programmers of search engines know that anybody can link to a site and the owner can’t do anything against it.
I guess a link from a site can be useless in worst case.
