Do you get sciatica?

thisisvegas asked 4 years ago
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sciatica

Or other related work place (I sit in a chair all day) type of injuries? For me it seemed to come out of nowhere but I have it on the right side and my calf muscle has been burning literally for 6+ months and it’s horrible. Treatments/therapies include acupuncture (check), Yoga (not yet), massage (check), physiotherapy (check). I have talked to a lot of people and it seems to stem from being in chair often and my posture.

I thought I had this taken care of by doing martial arts for 4+ years but this spring I had to slow down on muay thai since things were not improving. I now have home exercises and am supposed to take breaks. Just want to know if I’m not the only one who’s had this. I hate it!

I want this AK chair and their yeti chairs too! I have heard mixed reviews of the Aeron Miller chair.

I thought swimming would help a lot and I’m considering hitting the pool if I can’t do much else.

wow popular thread, don’t feel so bad that I’m not all alone but I will get over it.

I sit long hours with poor posture and Im fine.

Years ago when I was 18 – 21 I used to get bouts of Sciatica, also had it for a few weeks this year after birth of newborn twin girls (constant bending over).

For me swimming was the cure. When younger I used to go once a week or more, just for a few weeks till it cleared up.

This year, I had quite bad nerve pain in back and hip, one session of light swimming in fun pool with family and I was on the mend and in few days it had cleared up.

Just try relaxing swimming.

It pays to have an ergonomic office chair too – I still don’t always sit proper all the time but it does remind me to do so, and if I lean back in it for a few seconds periodically (think break) it puts me right back into shape and releases tension on the spot.

These kinds of things pay for themselves, you save therapy costs and massage costs and so on.

I used to have an Aeron chair — I didn’t think it was anything special.

Now I have an “AK Octane” chair, which is extremely comfortable:

The massage chairs didn’t get good until just recently. Now you can’t even tell it’s mechanical, it feels totally real. Hands, wrists and arms – you can feel them working you distinctly and perfectly.

I have this one http://www.humantouch.com/ijoy300.html and it looks nice in the living room, not bulky at all and I was able to match the furniture colors. I don’t think I could live without it anymore – at least not painfree.

I had a massage chair back in 02 and I got rid of it fast, maybe the new ones are good but real massage is better. I’ll have to demo the latest chairs though to see what they are like. I have had massage done every other week for maybe 3 years straight and last year I stopped which is ironic that I get this issue. I did train in muay thai the past year but I think I should have kept the massage in there too. Live and learn the hard way <span title=” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” />

I have a shiatzu (sp?) massage pad on my desk chair and it has been a life saver for sure.

John, I am emailing you some exersizes my PT gave me to do, maybe they will help you as well as the stretches you already have. If anyone else would like copies let me know and I will send them over to you. :hattip:

I have learned to get up for a few minutes every hour and walk and stretch in all directions.

But the best thing that ever happened to me is my massage chair. I sit in there every day for 1/2 hr before bed and it has made a huuuuge difference. You can get these just to put on top of your existing couch or armchair also, you don’t need to buy an expensive whole chair. The first few models that came out were not so good, but the later models are quite good and work well.

I can feel my back adjusting, some days with the occasional small “pop” and when I go to sleep I am all relaxed and wake up without stiffness. You ought to try one, the things you can put on your couch are available in most every drug store and inexpensive.

I haven’t been to the doc with it, but my chair tells me that there is one spot in my spine that affects the area of my thigh directly that causes me pain. I focus on that spot, you can choose where and how the things massage… and the pain is completely gone for some time, a few days at a time.

Yes, nearly everyone I talk to for acupuncture, massage, physio and starting to say the same thing, my posture is probably taking a toll on me. So I do have the exercises and stretches I need to do but I need to take my breaks as well. I was contemplating getting this chair:
