Aggressive moves by the U.S. to thwart online sports betting within its borders may spark a broad trade dispute with Caribbean and European nations that provide homes to the $12 billion Internet gambling industry.
The World Trade Organization in Geneva is said to be looking into complaints by Antigua and other countries that U.S. laws banning Internet betting violate free-trade rules. The WTO has previously approved some U.S. laws under its trade rules while rejecting others.
Antigua has been a big foe of the U.S. on the subject of online casinos, but other countries such as Costa Rica could be drawn into the fray. Costa Rica is home to betonsports.com, an online gaming site that has been severely curtailed by a temporary restraining order approved Monday by a federal court in Dallas.
Nice. We need more than just Antigua and Barbuda.
July 24, 2006 at 10:46 pm #699750AnonymousInactiveThe WTO is about the only institution which really thinks in the long run and thus rises above the typical political view from one legislation to another.
By the way, USA did something stupid today by refusing to lower their 20 billion agricultural aid. A free or almost free primary global economy is the key in the long term to poverty and as a result terrorism. Guns are political instruments, not economic solutions.
Sorry for posting this here, but I just remember my I-will-rebuild-the-world days from 3 years ago discussing how the western agricultural policy really s*cks big time.
July 24, 2006 at 11:00 pm #699752AnonymousInactiveThe WTO is of course an organisation based on sense and economics …
:thumbsup:but as we all know there is very little of either commodity when it comes to protectionist local politics …
:Ohno:Still – we can only hope that in time the United States will adopt an international position and start ligitimising a very real entertainment business…
(Mind you – how long has the METRIC SYSTEM been around? And Americans are still coming to terms with it … so it WILL TAKE TIME !!)

Please let’s stick to politics only as they relate to gambling.
I had to archive a thread just the other day because it turned into a warzone.
July 24, 2006 at 11:09 pm #699758AnonymousInactiveIt will take time indeed, but I was hoping for it because Bush is in the second half of his time so it’s time for him to think about how the history books will remember him.
July 25, 2006 at 2:19 am #699775AnonymousInactiveThis will take time – just like other legislation changes in history such as Prohibition, Pornography, etc.

But it is perfectly alright for the US to impose its “values” on the world.

Okay, if that’s what CAP wants.
I didn’t notice your post until now, so I didn’t post the second post after reading your question.
