Hello guys,
Currently I am using joomla 2.5 and i wanted to know if is a good choice. From your experience what CMS do you recommend me to use, Joomla or WordPress?
April 13, 2012 at 10:33 am #823475burundiMemberWordpress, hands down..
April 13, 2012 at 11:03 am #823477AnonymousInactiveWordpress for me but some prefer joomla. I’ve tried both and just find that wordpress is easier to work with and has way more plugins available.
April 13, 2012 at 12:20 pm #823482bhuriya.MemberHi Guys.
I finally got around to getting my account activated (must have missed the activation email) so this would be a good place for me to make my first post sigh.gif
This question is asked by many beginners and people wanting to start out building sites so let’s see if I can help you out.
Wordpress is very easy to install and easy to use. It’s simple to set up and start posting news and articles and you can get started very quickly.
Over the years more and more plug ins have been developed for wordpress and there are some nice templates particularly I am thinking of the rockettheme.com ones.
For someone building their first site definitely go with wordpress as it will allow you dip your toe in the very deep water and get started with minimal fuss.
Also if you plan on doing more blogging than pure article publishing then WordPress wins hands down. Joomla is not very good at blogging.
What Joomla is good at though is building sites that rely on a lot of javascript and CSS styling. It also has very powerful SEO capabilities with several very good add ons for that.
Also Joomla gives you powerful layout capabilities and template tweaking options. I think a Joomla site looks much better than a wordpress site when both are done properly.
If you plan on getting several authors to contribute to your site then that is what Joomla is built for – multi author publishing is it’s strong point.
The learning curve for wordpress is very easy and for joomla you need a lot of time and patience but long term the results are better with a joomla site if it is going to be a big one.
April 13, 2012 at 12:59 pm #823484AnonymousInactiveWhat a coincidence.
Just yesterday I was considering starting a new website or revamping an exisiting one into a “casino guest blogger” site. It occured to when me I got one of those emails asking if I would accept some free content in exchange for links in the article. One suggestion on CAP here is for you to go out and be a guest blogger in order to get link backs on authority sites.
It seemed easier to accept original content and let otherse build a site for me. I also tried running an article site and ran into spam issues.
I hated the idea of manually handling all the back and forth emailing it would entail for a guest article and did not remember seeing any WP plugins for it.
I also tried Joomla once and saw the curve you’re speaking out (so I just went back to WP).
Do you or anyone have any suggestions for good Joomla video tutorials. (I am lazy and have not even looked yet )
April 13, 2012 at 6:41 pm #823499bhuriya.MemberYou know. I don’t think Joomla is for you.
It’s not for people who want to play.
It’s for people who want to shoot.
Thanks

April 14, 2012 at 5:06 pm #823516bhuriya.MemberI can be such a ****! Sorry I misread your post.
I really think if you are happy with wordpress then you should stick with it for this reason:
We all know that our most valuable attribute is time. Time is money. When we are building sites and trying to make those clicks turn into sign ups it can seem like we never have enough time to get all the stuff done that we want to.
I know when I first started it always seemed like I had so much to do and so little time.
I’ve seen some great wordpress sites and sometimes I look at a site and go “wow!, they did THAT with wordpress!”
Learning Joomla is something I would discourage you from because it takes so much time to learn. With wordpress you get going pretty much straight away but with Joomla even if you use the rocket theme launchers like I do there is still a hell of a lot of work to be done to get it looking like a site.
I think the main advantage of Joomla is that with the menu and module system you can create sections of a site that are totally focused on the niche target.
For example you can create a poker section that has all of its own banners and modules totally different from the casino section etc. Which I don’t think you can do with wordpress. Maybe you can but it takes a lot of work.
For small niche sites and general day to day sites wordpress beats Joomla hands down but for multi section/author sites Joomla is much more powerful and flexible.
I like Joomla and rockettheme means you can have a nice looking site right out of the box but that’s only the start of a can of worms.
For example getting Jquery and mootools javascript libraries to work together on a new site took me three days to figure out with support from Jreviews and the template people.
When you want to do more complex stuff like run some nice reviews software etc then it can be hard to do with all the different versions and conflicts unless you have access to a good programmer which lets face it most of us don’t.
Those lost three days could have produced twelve to fifteen articles of high quality content published quickly with wordpress.
My advice is to stick with what you know because it is a lot more productive than what you don’t.
When you are making enough money with all the wordpress sites you can afford to **** around with Joomla and see what you can do with it. And afford to pay someone who knows PHP to sort out all the inevitable problems.
April 14, 2012 at 8:18 pm #823519AnonymousInactiveYou know, it is not for me.
You make a good case for Joomla for professional sites with time $ and backup. But for the one person outfit just starting out, it sounds like it really isn’t all that user friendly.
My original feeling was correct. I’ll stay with WP and not waste time with Joomla. You saved me a few more ‘gray hairs. Thanks.
April 17, 2012 at 12:03 pm #823598petersfeterMemberThanks guys for your opinions. From what i read here i see a lot of votes for WP and considering the tons of free widget market seems that WP is the best choice.

I understand the situation you’re in alebogbur, as I’ve had the experience working with both Joomla & WP. It really depends on what you want out of your CMS, because Joomla really is a great system, and at 1 point was the go-to CMS.
But… having now worked with WP so much… it has so many amazing offerings, and especially for an affiliate site, I would highly recommend it! Best of luck to you.
And… don’t hesitate to come back for any suggestions for WP plugins or themes, too!
