1. Google Panics Into Rush To Desktop Due To Microsoft Announcement
=========================================Google is yet another company in a long line of major players who are rushing to get on the
Windows desktop.Google, which holds about 75% of the Internet search market, just introduced “Deskbar” – a small
desktop application that allows users to search Google directly from their desktops.Google’s premier of Deskbar further strengthens my argument that the Windows Desktop is
extremely valuable marketing real estate.
Why Did Google Panic?
Bill Gates, in an interview appearing in the November 24, 2003 issue of Newsweek, was quoted as
saying that one of Microsoft’s mistakes was not creating a Web-scale search engine:NEWSWEEK: “Microsoft Research has done a lot of work in search technology. So how did you let
Google become synonymous with search?”GATES: “Because we mistakenly didn’t apply a lot of our advanced ideas to do a Web-scale search
engine. We were relying on an outside supplier for part of our search. That’s our mistake… We
didn’t make it as much of a priority as we should have, and a year ago we recognized that and
we’re on the job.”Microsoft recently announced that their next version of Windows, named “Longhorn”, will have
search integrated into the operating system. This means Microsoft is positioning itself to dominate online search. Simply put, if Google
could not find a way to get on the desktop, right now, it would be the death of Google. It is safe to assume that MSN search will be the default for Longhorn. This is still two years
away, however. That gives Google two more years to win people over with its version of integrated search, the
Deskbar.“The Google Deskbar is a search utility for the PC so that people can search Google in a faster
and new way,” said John Piscitello, product manager for Google Deskbar and the Google Toolbar.January 13, 2004 at 8:12 am #643509AnonymousInactiveI am getting notification from the crawler alert service (http://www.crawler-alert.com) that MS BOT is crawling deeply my sites
