I am looking to become a marketer for an online poker site or poker affiliate program. I’d like a change (currently I’m the head marketer for an IT consulting firm), like to get in on this emerging industry, and I have marketing ideas for online poker sites that I’ve yet to see any implement.

What I have done so far is send my resume unsolicited to a number of online poker sites and asking if they have a marketing job opening. The result of this effort has been one poker site being interested. Two weeks ago, I had a telelphone interview with one of the partners. Since then, I have sent three more emails (a summation of the talk right after the call, one the following Monday, and one two days ago) plus yesterday I called down to the partner (who wasn’t in) and left a message that I was doing a follow-up call with his office. But no second call since the first one two weeks ago nor any reply to any of the three emails I sent the partners since that first telephone conversation.

Additionally, after firing off that my resumes, I posted to rec.gaming.poker newsgroup and a few other online poker forums the basic question this post is about. I received a lot of helpful pointers to job sites where some online poker marketing jobs have been posted. I have fired off my resume to about twenty of them. No word back from any. Posters at these forums have also pointed me to other poker forums, such as one forum administrator pointing me to this one today.

Since posting to the newsgroup and online forums, I have had four poker sites read my posting and asked me to email them my resume. I have had telephone conversations with two of them.

What I would appreciate is any suggestions on what else I can do to land myself a marketing job with an online poker site or poker affiliate program. The desired job would be as their marketing strategist since that is my strongest suit.

    Thanks in advance!

Have you already checked out the weekly e-mail newsletter of http://www.egrmagazine.com/ ? It’s packed with job openings related to online poker and gambling in general. With your experience you should easily qualify for many of the affiliate manager and marketing positions found on the newsletter.

Yes, I subscribe to that newsletter and have submitted my resume to the jobs for which I think I am qualified. Most though I didn’t submit to since they only want those that have marketing experience with online gambling.

    Thanks for the help!

My wife worked for one of the bigger casinos (member at CAP) till a year ago. She had over ten years in the land based industry and decided to give the online industry a go.

The biggest adjustment she had to make was moving from a stable, procedure driven environment to one where change happens on a daily basis, things happen at breakneck speed and everyone is trying their damndest to keep up. If you let go of the reigns for a split moment you can find yourself overwhelmed with playing catch up (and have thousands of affiliates / players on your back). Not very forgiving and not for the feint hearted.

If you consider this industry my advice is that you are very ambitious and preferably young and single. I don’t think there is much work that is based in the U.S. though, for obvious reasons, and casinos having staff working off site isn’t likely. Their user database is far to valuable and they can only keep control of it from their own environment. My wife wasn’t allowed to use a memory stick at work for example.

I have seen jobs advertised in Gibralter, Canada, the U.K. and obviously here in South Africa (where microgaming was started). Its not always the country where the casino is licensed, as many will hold their license in Gibralter or Isle of Man, and have an “outsourced” company perform their marketing and support in a country that suits them for whatever reason, be it legal or possibly where the ownership originated.

Something to consider. Choose your first job carefully, since you will more than likely have to sign a restraint of trade, and if you hate your first job you will face a legal battle trying to get work at a competitor.

Something I find surprising is how many sites don’t even have a single professional marketer. Those that don’t have one of the partners handle the marketing and they freely admit not knowing much about marketing.

I am ambitious, not so young (depending if you think 42 is young or not), and am single without any dependents. I’m ready for a change.

I always tell those that interview me that I am willing to relocate anywhere in the world that isn’t a combat zone. I also think that being an American marketer is a good thing in my favor for those poker sites wishing to market to Americans.

Quite understandable and something I would expect.

I am more than willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement but if they want me to sign a non-compete agreement, they will have to pay. That and it is very hard to enforce if I move to another country to work for a different poker site, which would likely be the case.
