Besides the fact Google Penalties & Algorithm updates can cause your site’s SEO to take a hit, they’re both very distinctive elements.

And… in this case knowledge is power ;) Seriously, it’s integral knowing if your site has been hit from an update vs a penalty so you can understand what needs to be fixed & how.

More Details Here: Google Penalties vs. Algorithm Updates: What’s the Difference?

On a separate note… anyone ever experience thinking their site had been hit by an algorithm update and it was actually a penalty? Or vice versa? What did you do in that situation?

I was surely hit on a non-gaming site with algorithm updates – but if a penalty is only a manual adjustment, I doubt they ever got to me.

But I guess I am one of those rare people that do not use google webmaster tools on all my sites. I use a different stats program that works better for me.

So it would be really hard to contact me that way and tell me!

If I may ask which stats program do you use?

    Sure, no problem

    statcounter.com

It’s usually the first thing I look at.
It works best for me because I have lots of sites.
