    Report on Webmaster World:

Webmaster world must have had 1000 attendees. Like most conferences of this type, the speeches themselves were not worth attending. I attended what was supposed to be the best one, it focused on search engines. They had someone from yahoo, overture, google, and ask jeeves representing each engine. The only insight i came away with that was that yahoo is light years ahead of google with the new technology and investments in personalized search. Ask jeeves seems to be growing, and google doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. They are arrogant and the engine is stagnant. I approached them at the booth and mentionned common problems. The adwords problem I have and most people have is that they wont allow a person to get enough impressions no matter how high they bid and how much they tweak the ads. They of course denied this and pretended this problem doesn’t exist. When it came to them answered questions as to why the new sites were not being indexed, they also denied this. Basically I dont even know why they were there. All they could do was deny that google has any type of flaw whatsever.

The highlight was yahoo renting out the Rain nightclub at The Palms. Apparently it cost them $165000 to rent it for the night. They had a ‘tournament’ where they gave a fake $1000 to everyone to play at table games and the winner would walk away with a cruise and runner-ups would win multiple prizes such as ipods. Being competitive like I am, I cheated my way to the top. When the girl next to me spilled her drink, and the dealer went to grab something to clean up the spill, i reached over and grabbed a whole bunch of chips… In the end it was a random draw, so it didn’t matter anyway.

Most of the good information was of course from networking. The actual pubcon on the last day was very dissapointing. They rented out an irish pub that was way too small for the crowd. It was way too crowded to get any discussions, or anything going.

I’m still unsure if I’ll return to the webmaster world conference. Casinos that had booths were 888.com and casinoblasters.com Empire poker was also there.

Thanks for the report Antoine. Doesn’t sound like it was that great?

Would you mind letting us know how you would you rate it from 1 to 10? (1 poor and 10 excellent)?

This seems to be a common conference disease.

google doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. They are arrogant and the engine is stagnant.

That is what I would have expected from them.

    Sorry I missed that.

Yes, sorry I missed that, too!

    Thanks for writing this!!!!

I would give it a 6. The networking was the best aspect, but that’s the case for any conference in my opinion.

I kept comparing it to the casino affiliate conference. At the casino conference lunch was included and involved a nice buffet at a great italian restaurant. At the webmaster world conference lunch was simply a premade sandwich, with potato salad and chips. If someone was a vegetarian or allegic to any of the food this wasn’t so great. On the last day I slept in and didn’t show up until lunch was half over, and there was nothing left.

This conference was better for being introduced to people from different industries. I met a lot of rx affiliates for example. I think it’s well worth it simply for the large volume of people.

I think Antoine did a good job of summarizing the conference.

The Yahoo party at Rain was very cool…

Also, I can confirm that Antoine is a very proficient at creative Blackjack playing. Changing bet size mid hand and grabbing chips when the dealer wasnt looking was in his arsenal. Too funny… I didnt catch it at all, but did notice his chip count doubling at times even though no hands were played. Later I learned that only a Swedish fellow and myself played straight up… everyone else at the table were also proficient cheaters…lol

The quality level of the speakers was similiar to the CAC in October, but there was a lot more action in the bars afterwords when seo’s and others would gather and talk into the wee hours. It was a little tough for new folks to get in on the talks as this crowd seemed a little secretive at times.

    The highlights for me:

    • The Yahoo Party
    • Cutting some deals
    • Being mistaken for Antoines dad
    • Getting a short interview on web radio and not sounding too stupid

I would go again despite some of the shortcomings.

I forgot that I was mistaken for Kevin’ son… but why is that every time I go to Vegas everyone thinks I look like there little brother…

btw – Antoine doesnt look that young and I dont look that old. The guy who said this comment noticed we were being friendly with a very attractive lady at the bar and was probably trying to put a damper on things for me… lol

Yep, WmW was good, didn’t have any time attending sessions, and was talking to other SEOs all day (and night) it was nice meeting antoine & kevin11 (It took us both some real hard time to recognize each other at the bar ;-> but it was well worth it. )
