Guys check out this video. Its a discussion between online gambling foes and the Online Poker Advocacy Group that was broadcast on CNBC today:
I wish the advocate would have talked less about “possible” gambling addiction/treatiment and more on the hypocricy of his opponent. I wish he would have asked him who he thinks he is to legislate HIS ideals on others or what makes him so grand that he knows what is best for all. That is the point. Freedom of choice. The opponent is obviously ignorant on the online Gambling issues at hand.
“Grandmothers gambling away their Soc. Security Checks”… give me a break. I think he should spend his time fighting the Lotteries that go directly into the Governments coffers. It is becoming a ridiculous display.
I heard in there somewhere that they are going to vote today. Wonder if that’s going to be on cspan or something? Hope it’s doesn’t go like Washington vote.

One of the arguements was where would we spend the money….he said the lottery was for education, where would this go.

Just read this one. Actually this is quite good news.
“Despite the committee’s approval, 25-11, it remains unclear whether the legislation will reach floor votes in the House and Senate this year. Congress has a relatively few work days left in 2006 because of the November congressional elections.”
1) this was just a committee vote to allow the bill to survive
2) the vote probably won’t happen this year
3) mid-term elections are just around the corner, which could make it tougher for the conservatives to push this through
4) if they don’t vote on it this year, doesn’t the bill have to be reintroduced all over again. Not sure how this works, but hasn’t this been what has doomed past attempts?

I was disappointed with the misleading inuendos from the opposer. Also, I do feel the poker (and casino) industry could of had a better argument than the one that was presented. I agree with webber286 that it was a very odd argument because, YES, if it is ALREADY illegal than why do you need a new bill of any kind!? :confused:

I agree with everyone – the advocate did not state his case very well at all.
Has anyone ever noticed bus loads of grandmothers getting off the tour buses going to brick and mortar casinos all over the US? They certainly arent headed for bancruptcy court.

Good point. But really it is a non issue. Drug users do it even if it is Illegal. Gambling ADDICTS will gamble even if it is illegal. Allowing Gambling does not make it addictive. That is a personality disorder. This is a silly premise.
By Regulating and taxing the government could help get rid of seedy speakeasy and backroom parlors. It is just insanity how this is talked about. With little or no common sense from the opposition.

I seen this at the local Indian casino. I dont think grandmothers on social security are savy computer people.
Alcohol, tobacco, and pornography. As long as we outlaw these 3, I will have no problem approving the gambling legislation. Otherwise, they can stick their hypocrisy where the sun don’t shine !
