Can someone recommend a company that can value a domain for me? I don’t mind paying a fee as I want to get an accurate estimate.
Thanks in advance

Some value on SEO potential, others on market potential, some by a multiple of current earnings, others rate by sector, length, extension…all sorts. Bottom line is no-one has a clue.
Everyone likens internet property to real estate – but it’s so far removed it’s not even comparable. Real Estate has templates (4 bed house, 1 acre of land etc) so you can place values on the substance. Most domains rely on their “potential” and of course, no-one can put a price on “potential” because it depends on whose hands it’s in.
It’s a cliché but it’s true: a domain is worth what someone will pay for it and that will generally be because of one of two things; Brandability or Keyword ranking potential. The latter is easier to sell as the first needs a marketing budget. But the right brand name could be more valuable if short and snappy or just happens to be what someone needs at that particular moment.
Don’t waste your money. You can get ballpark estimates from some of the forums like dnforum.com or namepros.com by placing it is the relevant forum asking for user opinions, but that’s about the best you’ll get.
One final note – a domain might be “worth” $100,000 but that doesn’t mean to say there will be a buyer prepared to pay it

your domain has no value besides a perceived one
shouldnt stop you from selling it like there is no tomorrow though…
August 13, 2008 at 6:05 pm #775474AnonymousInactiveI have never paid more that 10 bucks for a domain, and my top limit is $20. That’s what I think of domains.
Domains with attached sites, good or bad, are a different story.

So, you wouldn’t buy casino.com for $21? :wink-wink
August 13, 2008 at 6:53 pm #775478biggygMemberI have paid as much as $50,000 for a domain name ,domain value means different things to different people.

Ah, alright, $21 seems reasonable.
Casino.com has other value, based on it’s history i.e. the sites attached to the domain. The name isn’t what carries value to me, the history though is another story.
You can build a top ranking site on any domain, names only matter if you plan to brand. And even there you can use mediocre names, GamesandCasino is mediocre at best and well branded.
A domain that has a lot of type ins based on previously existing sites may be worth something.
Still, spending much money on a domain makes little sense to me, I’d rather spend it on the site.
August 15, 2008 at 1:09 am #775652AnonymousInactiveA good starting point is to evaluate if the domain has “legs” in advertising terms.
For instance a domain targeting “Resort” or “divorce” has a good potential advertising income.
Maybe 1,000 attorneys paying $500 year to be listed in a heavy traffic site means 500K year.
But there’s more in terms of SEO, PPC potential etc.Try this source a cup of weeks and you’ll have an estimate of your domain name. http://www.dnjournal.com/domainsales.htm
August 20, 2008 at 12:10 pm #776206AnonymousInactiveI paid to get SEDO or some other domain sales place to rate my domain in order to put it up for sale. So they took my domain and site that resides there, a 7 letter dotcom that’s been online nearly ten years. Had a PR6 at the time, 850,000 uniques a month, 3.5 million page views.
Their estimate? less than $1000. Monthly revenues for the site (not gray in anyway) are about $2000 per month. Based on revenues/net profit it’s worth $50-100k.
Great job appraising my domain: a rip off and a job done not by a person actually reviewing things, but a stupid program that must only work off the input by the operator, clearly Alexa or any other public metric wasn’t even considered. And since i didn’t tell them what the traffic and revenues were, they had no clue about the domain or website.
