The following is being reported by iGamingBusiness:

    Quote:
UK to Restrict Online Casino Advertising
    30-01-07

Online gambling companies based outside Europe and Gibraltar will have to apply to the government if they want to advertise their products in the UK when the activity is legalised on September 1.

Tessa Jowell, British Culture Secretary said a ban on websites run by companies with poor regulation would protect online gamblers from crime and exploitation.

The announcement was made as the government-appointed Casino Advisory Panel prepares to announce today its recommendation for the siting of the UK’s first super-casino.

Ms Jowell is to lay out the timetable and procedure for the government to respond to the recommendation, leading to a vote of MPs.

The legalisation of online gambling and deregulation of casinos are part of a series of measures voted through under the 2005 Gambling Act that updates gambling laws. The Gambling Act relaxes advertising rules for UK bookmakers and casino operators, but gaming websites based outside the European Economic Area and Gibraltar and wishing to advertise will have to prove their licensing regimes protect children, deter crime and ensure gambling is fair.

Now Ms Jowell has instructed officials to set in motion procedures that would force companies to contribute a levy to the Responsibility in Gambling Trust to help problem gamblers.

John Greenway, Conservative MP and chairman of the Trust, said, ‘The main problem is that we are dependent on people making a voluntary contribution. There is some concern (from online gambling companies) about the costs of implementing the Gambling Act.’

I’m not too concerned about this. This law is meant to be applied to online casino operators, and I believe it applies mainly to TV, newspaper, and billboard advertising. Affiliates probably have little to worry about at this point.

That’s how I would imagine it would operate also.

This is basically what regulation means. Only legit operators may advertise their casinos.

It sounds to me like if you just advertise approved online operators it will be okay. Given what I’ve seen from a lot of offshore sites over the last couple of months, I don’t blame them for having this rule. It’s to protect the consumer from fly by nights taking off with their money.

Yes, UK is fair country. They will embrass online gambling but want a regulated environment, with a legal support. So, they did not say, eveybody is welcome, but everybody that wants to stick to rules that will provide a safe gambling environment to gamblers, is welcome.

That’s correct, and that is legalization. Otherwise it would be anarchy. what we have in US is protectionism.

It might negatively impact affiliates who do PPC on uk search engines such as espotting or overture uk.

Other than that I dont think much will change.

The UK already has fairly strict terms on offline advertising: you can’t advertise bonuses or play on the fact people can “win” etc etc. I’m pretty sure that this is aimed at offline advertising but would probably strictly also apply to advertising on 3rd party UK company websites (ie: banners on Amazon etc), and it would apply to anyone, operators, affiliates etc who advertise offline.

It’s a pretty sensible move and the first real step towards proper regulation IMO.
