The guarantee that I offer is to ‘go to bat’, but I would never try to guarantee satisfaction. I do know that people lie… I am just attempting to create an environment where honest people can play and feel safe knowing that the properties being promoted are honest.

I do not get many requests for arbitration and hope that continues :)

I always look at both sides, though. Have to.

In regards to popups some people I know regularly explain their hatred for this rude conduct, as more a more webmasters use them. From Eric,

“Some particularly irritating designers have discovered the magic formula that causes your browser to spawn a new window when you click on a link — or worse, ways to make pop-up windows appear even if all all you’re trying to do is exit their wretched hive of scum and villainy as rapidly as you can find the Back button. Stay in your own window, dammit! The Web is supposed to be about viewer control; designers who persist in rudely grabbing pieces of the viewer’s screenspace without permission deserve to be lashed with knouts”

Greek most everyone uses pop ups. They are an accepted form of advertising and as long as one doesnt get carried away with them they arent the end of the world. Most browsers and many ISPs block the majority of pop ups anyway now so they are not a huge problem which requires the attention of the hacker community.

Regarding multiple window spawners those are not normal affiliates, I only know of ONE person who frequents CAP who does spawners and its a terrible thing to do to your visitors. I cant imagine anyone else being the least bit interested in alienating thier guests.

You keep making reference to hackers. I find it Ironic that people who break into other peoples computers, create and relase viruses and worms on to the internet and steal the work of other programmers by cracking codes would get indignant about a pop up ad.

Most of us are honest decent people trying to earn enough money to support our families. We do this through online marketing. 99.9% of the people here are NOT hackers, dont write malicious code, dont do DOS attacks on others, Dont SPAM millions of people or anything like that. We arent evil techies bent on world domination.

Is affiliate marketing perfect? Hell No!

Does fraud exist? Yes, unfortunately it does in our industry just as it does in EVERY other industry.

Can we stamp out all fraud? No, that’s unrealistic. We do what we can, but understand all businesses suffer a loss due to internal and external theft, nature of the beast.

Do we need a daily crusade to crush the evil merchants? No, most of us are earning a pretty good living online and have done so for years. We work with the partners that EARN us money, we DROP the partners that dont. It’s a simple economic formula that works. It rewards the good merchants while punishing the bad. We dont need to threaten them or hack them or burn down their buildings to achieve economic success.

Do we want to share information about unscrupulous operators?
Absolutely! That’s one of the reasons we are here. BUT…. It’s not necessary to make every business dispute a crusade or call to arms.
Calm discussion (and discrete sabre rattling) is generally all it takes to get things sorted out. We dont need a nuclear attack to erase miscommunication.

Free Enterprise is about FREE ENTERPRISE. We all have the right to build our sites the way we wish. If some one wants to put up an exit pop up on their site then ITS THEIR BUSINESS. No one has a RIGHT to make demands upon or threaten other people if they dont like the way they run their business.

I will be DAMNED if I will surrender my business or freedom of choice to some hacker somewhere who decides THEY dont like pop ups so the rest of the world better quake in fear!!! Thats HORSE SHIT!

Sorry to get so worked up, but this constant mention of hackers and black arts is making everyone uncomfortable and now it seems like that is starting to extend to threats about pop ups! Thats rediculous!

Yeah, I was getting you. I was just thinking it’s a word I’d stay away from so a surfer, etc, doesn’t get confused.

Greek… I’m not so sure tracking downloads would be that helpful… you’d have to track activity afterward too. That’s where you’d run into problems. People probably wouldn’t consent to that, unless there was some large benefit for them in the deal as well. I can’t think of a benefit big enough for me to want to allow myself to be tracked like that while playing.

Hard to argue with that. And even if someone is caught shaving red-handed, there’s usually little recourse.

I agree with you professor in many respects. A hacker is not a person going around destroying people lives on the net. A hacker is a person who creates something useful for example, dos, linux, Microsoft, anti virus programs, dreamweaver mx the list is endless. Without hackers there would be no net as we know it today. Mr.Gates but his first script from a hacker for 50,000.00.Lunus who developed linux died a poor man.

I refer to a malicious hacker a person who takes down things. Highjacks computers, corrupts code, shuts down yahoo ect… this I am not. But its strange because if you know the good side the reality is you know the bad side as well. Just like the anology you cannot know truth without lies. This is inescapable fact and a logical one.

How can you know something without knowing the other? I do not deal with malicious hackers in a polite way. If they throw a hand grenade at me I throw it back.

If I make CAp members feel a little uncomfortable I am sorry. I am prepared to leave but these are the cards that were dealt to me. I would “quake in fear” if I had some malicious hacker after me or my site. Its up to The people on this private forum and of coarse the professor, want me gone and I will go. greek39

P.S who was Neil in the Matrix a hacker.

Greek we dont want YOU gone. we want the hacking references gone.

Programmers create code. Software engineers create systems and are paid to do so. Most people view “hackers” as people who “hack” exisiting code created by others without their authorization. Before becoming a full time affiliate I worked for a major electronics manufacturer who employed dozens of full time programmers, we created code and satisfied our clients needs we didnt take other peoples exisiting programs and hack them, the term hacking generally causes honest engineers to bristle.

If you “hack” Microsoft code and Bill Gates does find out he will most likely sue you not reward you as a pioneer.

Perhaps you consider the term programmer and hacker interchangable, but I never have. But it really doesnt matter if you call it hacking, cracking or hungarian dwarf tossing we dont want it here.

Greek we love you for you not because you can sick Eric or Neil or even Morpheous on the baddies. I know you just want to help your fellow affiliates and we all appreciate that, it’s just that we are asking that it be done in a constructive way.

If you want to contact people privately and propose other methods of working out problems that’s beyond our control. But we wont have hostile activity discussed here at the forums….

Now thats enough of this unhappy chat… Its the holiday season and we should all be celebrating the years good fortune with family and friends and planning on a prosperous new year.

Thank you professor for your understanding. Just for trivia linux server is a hack it was bulit on top of unix. I consider the terms interchangeable.

I haven’t heard of “dwarf tossing” what the hell. You have a talent of making me laugh something not too many people can do.

I agree things should be done in a more constructive way and will be from now on. I thank you for you support. I promise one day I will meet you in person along with others. I hoping I can get away for the CAP spring break. I can tune up your laptops really nice.

    In greek salou (cheers) greek39:clapper:

Without getting into a discussion over the term or usage of the word “hacker,” they can quite benevolent at times. Many just try to find vulnerabilities in systems or software for the challenge, then report the vulnerabilities and they wind up patched.

More annoying are the scans and script kids out there. When I was a sysadmin, it all drove me nuts. I had servers pretty locked down, but I live in a world where too many people are smarter or better than me at so many things.

Not really the place for that discussion, but I’ll add this. That guy didn’t throw me very far. If you look at the picture, I actually have more calf muscle than he does.
