Liverpool (11/10) travel to play Tottenham Hotspur (12/5) on Saturday in what promises to be a challenging trip for the table-topping Reds.
Spurs are on an upward curve after Harry Redknapp’s arrival as manager last week signalled a return to form, with a first league win at home to Bolton followed up by a heroic fightback at the Emirates in a 4-4 draw with local rivals Arsenal.
Now the north Londoners face Premier League leaders Liverpool, who last week ended the seemingly-indomitable Chelsea’s 86-game unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge.
The match could see the return of Spanish hot-shot Fernando Torres from a hamstring injury – Liverpool’s top league goalscorer is 9/2 to mark his return with the opener.
One of the early changes Redknapp has made in the Spurs hotseat is to reinstate Russian Roman Pavyluchenko as first choice striker – the Euro 2008 star is a tempting 7/1 to break the deadlock.
Chelsea (2/9) are in the familiar position of chasers again after their demoralising loss to Liverpool, but will be hoping to get the Scolari Show back on the road against Sunderland (14/1).
Brazilian boss Jose Felipe Scolari is still without main men Michael Ballack, Michael Essien and Didier Drogba, who are all still on the casualty list.
The Blues will be looking to show more attacking menace than last week at Stamford Bridge, but Frank Lampard and Nicolas Anelka added to their growing goal tallies in the 3-0 win over Hull City in mid-week.
With seven goals in all competitions already this season, Lampard is 4/1 to grab the first goal in this contest, with six-goal Anelka available at 7/2.
Having lost their last four league outings at Stamford Bridge, the Black Cats could be playing for the point, with the draw available at 9/2.
With Arsenal’s (2/5) striker Emmanuel Adebayor casting doubt over his team’s title chances after their capitulation against Spurs on Wednesday, Stoke City (7/1) might fancy their chances at the Britannia Stadium.
The Togo international admitted: “There is a lot of disappointment. We are down at the moment because we did everything to get the three points and we ended up with one.”
“We feel very sorry for ourselves that the things are not going the right way.”
Adebayor is 4/1 favourite to show his commitment to the cause by bagging the opening goal.
Stoke proved they can mix it with the big guns in holding Liverpool to a 0-0 draw earlier in the season – Tony Pulis’s men are 7/2 to take two points off another title contender.
The Gunners vulnerability may be compounded by the loss of captain William Gallas to injury, while there is also a question mark over Emmanuel Eboue.
Can Spurs stunt Liverpool’s title bid?
