The best piece of advice that I could lend to an affiliate entering the iGaming world is… do your homework when it comes to the programs you decide to partner with. Only affiliates can really understand that amount of time and energy that goes into promoting a brand. And you do not want all of that to go in vain if the program turns out to be un-trustworthy, or perhaps rogue.
What do you think the best piece of advice is for new affiliates getting into the space?

Good SEO rankings in this vertical take at least 18 months so you have to be patient unless you have a bunch of cash to invest in paid media right off the bat, which also will take time to tune and make a profit on.

Explore a niche that really interests you. Before you get a domain name or start promoting, check out SEOmoz’s free online “Beginner’s Guide To SEO”. Then start learning & exploring more on SEO at google keywords tool and everyplace else you can find. But don’t ‘fall for’ anyone’s get rich quick ‘pitch’.
If you are from the USA, you’ll also rest easier if you promote to the NON-USA market.
Cheers ):

I agree 100% with Warren on this one. We’re at the point where we build sites and don’t expect to earn anything on them for at least a year so be patient. Also don’t overdevelope a new site. Start with a few pages and slowly add to it to target new keywords. This way google will expect to find new content and will visit your site more often. You want to reach a point where you post a new page of news story and it gets indexed immediately.
A mistake I see a lot of new webmasters doing is going live before the site is finished. Build the site first, then go over every page and analyze everything to make sure you didn’t miss anything or make a critical error. There are tons of free tools you can use that will help you optimize your site. Then go live and wait.

Thats great advice JillO – I know a lot of us have learned that one the hard way, and it can be devastating. I also agree with all other points here.
My piece of advice for affiliates would be to try new things, sometimes the less obvious things can have a lot of impact on the end result. Also with me its just as much about looking at what my competitors are not doing, as it is about looking at what they are doing. – Be bold and try new things

Took me 6yrs to listen to that piece of advise.
Early on it was much easier, put up 10 sites, traffic arrives quickly and you’re making money.
Now days it has to be more thought out.

Play… this is awesome advice. And so right on!
This also brings to light the importance of diversification. Affiliates can never put all of their “eggs in one basket.”

Excellent advice, i have been suprised at a few things iv put up just for the sake of mixing up my content and keeping the sites fresh, some keywords, phrases you wouldnt get from spending hours using the google adwords keyword tool, that have had great results and were pretty much by accident, also alot of people would say put all your efforts into making one or two great sites rather than 20 thin low quality sites, well i have to disagree on this one, yes you should have at least 2 main sites but you should be planning for the future, what if your main site get slapped by google, penalised etc, try and have lots of sites started, watch how they move about in the serps, then when you see one starting to rank, or getting hits, then work on it. I have been pretty much been throwing sites up the last 2 months just trying different niches, i know they wont rank for months but they are up and if they never rank well then you can use them to link to your main sites
March 7, 2012 at 9:11 pm #822248AnonymousInactiveI have to say ask questions about the programs you promote and when I say ask I mean ask other affiliates. While no one can say a certain program is 100% safe, will always pay you and will always take care of your players, we can tell you with 100% accuracy who will not pay you and who will not take care of your players. You can have the best design, them most accurate content and the top SEO key words, but if your programs stiff you or your players, what good is it.
I know this is not your first step, but believe me, get stiffed once or twice and it will become one of your most important steps. It’s not that it happens often, I don’t think it does, but even once is too much so ask about a programs and the aff manager’s reputation and find out if the gaming site itself is reputable. Join the sportsbook yourself, speak with customer service, make a deposit and when you win, find out if they pay you without a hassle.
Good luck and keep coming back.
