i am reading different opinions about adding target_blank to links
some say its evil to make the users PC open a new window,
others say its is just out…..
and again some others say they like itAs a surfer i say i always liked it more if i click on a new link that it opens in a new window, so i still stay on the main page and dont have to hit my back button then to return to the page i started.
i add to all my links the target_blank
What is your opinion about that?
Good thing or not?
And does it have any effect to the SEs?thank you

Unlikely to be any effect on the SE’s. I use it when I send players away from my site but rarely for internal links.

yeah i also use it if send players away from my site
i find it better if the click on a link to a casino,
that they still have my site open then.i think users are clicking links, and then decide no i wanna look for something else, then its sure good if they are still on your site to look more around.

I have been to a few sites recently where every single link (internal or external) has sent me to a blank page. To be honest.. this gives me the shits.. (in aussie talk that means the same as making me really angry).
I think internal links should stay in the same window. For SE purposes, make the links inside your site all refer to the full path name. So instead of linking to index.asp refer to http://www.websitename.com/index.asp
For any external links, I think for business purposes you should have them open in a new window. That ensures the ‘customer’ is still on your site in the background and can refer to it if they need to.
I think by sending visitors to a new site in the same window (i.e. the visitor leaving your site to go to the new one) is just asking them to go somewhere else. Thats my opinion.

I don’t have much to offer that hasn’t been stated – i.e., if it’s a link to a different website make it open up a new window; otherwise keep it in the same window.

I agree with the previous posters.
For internal links – use the same window.
For external links – use target=_blank.Search engines aren’t concerned with the targets. On the other hand, it’s important to retain as much traffic as possible. Keeping your site open in the background gives you another chance at traffic, and sales.
This was an interesting thread and confirms what I also think, good to know I’m not going horribly wrong
Problem is you’re all looking at this from the point of view of what you think is best for you, not what’s best for your customers.
The answer to this depends on many things, but the major thing is how savvy are your visitors? If they are internet freaks then they know they can right-click / middle-click, open in a new window/tab if they want, and doing it for them automatically is likely to annoy them and they won’t come back. They are also likely to appreciate a little icon/indicator that a link will take them out of the site. This type of user also has little difficulty finding your site again after navigating away.
On the other end of the scale if they are relatively tech-illiterate then they are just happy to click around and likely have popups all the time – and opening in a new window does as you say, keep your site visible so they can easily find it again.
So the answer is “it depends”. Get to know your customers and you’ll have a better idea of the right answer to this question for your site.
