About two weeks ago I reregistered one of my domain name with registerfly.com (vegascasino24.com). The name had lasped by about a week so I had to prove to them I was the owner, I did and proceeded to register the name. A day or to later the name gone, no longer in my account and the whois info was not in my name. Now after contacting them everday for a week and getting no where they tell me I can have the name back if I just pay a $200.00 redemption fee. Has anyone ever heard of this? Needless to say I will be pulling all of my domain names out of registerfly. Any input would be of great help.

After the domain is deleted it then goes into this Redemption Grace Period status for 30 days. A status that was just added a few months ago to give domain owners a final last chance to get the domain back.
The registrar wholesale price originally started at $85.00 per RESTORE command. The reasoning was to recoup costs on the development of the new status code and the lost money the registry loses by tying the domain up for 30 days with no paying customer. The good news is that Verisign announced they have recovered the development cost and effective June 1st 2003 they will lower the price to $40.00 per RESTORE command.
Thanks Michael

I still think that is too much.
Others may disagree with me here, but not only is Verisign too much for all the services they offer, I recommend to all my clients to pick a different registrar.
Have you ever tried to transfer a domain name away from them….say 30 days before expiration?? Forget it, you can’t! You must transfer away from them 31 days or before….or they will make you pay the $35 before they will release it.
Ever tried to move a host record away from Verisign? Be careful with this one…It’s safest to just move the entire domain that carries your host record to a different registrar, and contact that registrar ahead of time to be sure the host record will move smoothly.
emg35, I’m not sure they can force you to pay the $200, unless they normally charge 200 for a restore. (in that case I would think you may have no option if you want to hold on to the name.)
Did you pay for the renewal with your CC? Was the card charged? If so, you could file a domain name dispute, but that would tie up the name for a considerable amount of time.
If you decide to transfer, many registrars will give you a year from the time you put the transfer order in. I personally run a front end for a registrar as a “transparent registrar” for my hosting clients and if you would like the link, send me a private message and I will reply with the link. (It would not be appropriate for me to post the link in this open forum)

June 6, 2003 at 7:02 am #639175AnonymousInactiveExactly,
If it made it into your account, and you paid for it, and they ran the charge, you have a little more amunition to file a dispute that you acted in good faith to purchase and reserve the name.
It would help even more if you have a screen shot of the domain in you admin panel or whatever domain manager from your registrar.
Also, if you got any confirmation emails from your registrar, be sure to save those.
