I am new here but I was clicking through and reading and all of a sudden a download box popped up asking me to download Gator. I’m a bit confused. I was in the chat room area when it happend. I don’t have Gator nor do I want it and this box wants me to download it. I canceled it but I thought that is what everyone was against? Could it be they have infected this site? Please, soemone explain!
March 1, 2003 at 1:49 pm #638655AnonymousInactiveHi Mstgr,
Lol, I strongly doubt that the Professor made a deal with Gator to come and get his visitors! I can only think of two possibilities – the popup was of the slow loading kind and you actually picked it up earlier when surfing, and it just happened to pop up here, Or they are actually targeting this site with ads for themselves and think they are funny.
In the second scenario you would have to be infested.
Try going to this address http://www.spywareguide.com/txt_detect.php
to see if you are infected withy something. And/or go here http://www.mailermailer.com/rd?http://spybot.safer-networking.de/index.php?lang=en&page=news to download a free program that will get rid of all your spyware. Usually this program http://www.mailermailer.com/rd?http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ is enough though, a smaller program that catches most types of spyware.Let me know if you found anything you were infected with!
March 1, 2003 at 1:57 pm #638656AnonymousInactiveit happened to me too, very strange, it is the last place I expected this to come from
JanetMarch 1, 2003 at 2:00 pm #638657AnonymousInactiveHow odd!
Can you tell me the last two sites you surfed before you came here?
March 1, 2003 at 2:53 pm #638658AnonymousInactiveJanet, I’m glad I’m not the only one this happend to. I was worried it was just me. I am going to try to retrace my steps and see if it happens again. Dominique, I will let you know if I can get it to do it again and let you know exactly what happend.

I will keep my eye’s on this thread so please let us know what happens.
March 2, 2003 at 8:33 am #638660APN AdministratorGuestGreetings,
We do not condone any scumware usage on this network. Rest assured, there is no “hidden” scumware on the chat room. The site is not infected, either. Perhaps you could take a screen shot and paste the image into a post?
March 2, 2003 at 8:40 am #638661AnonymousInactiveThanks for your reply. I didn’t think there was intentional scumware here but I was worried about someone infecting the site. I am unsure how it all works so I didn’t know. I thank you, AffiliateKing and Dominique for helping me understand. I really like this site and was hoping it wasn’t sabatoged. I believe it might have been another site I was in before I came here last night and I am trying to narrow it down so I don’t go there again. Thanks again, Mstgr1 (Barbi)
March 2, 2003 at 1:37 pm #638662AnonymousInactiveActually, I have conferred with people who understand coding (I know zilch) and I found out that it would be entirely possible to program the popup (at gator’s, not here) to appear when the the board script is requested, so it would pop up exactly when someone wants to enter the forum, which is what happened to mstgr. That would make it look like you had to download it in order to get in.
However, I have tried this a number of times and nothing happened.
I must add that there are so many gator type programs out there today that mstgr and janet could easily be infected with something that didn’t show with simple testing.
March 2, 2003 at 3:57 pm #638663AnonymousInactive:confused: Dominique, If I might be infected with this scumware then how can I get rid of it and is there anything I can do to avoid getting it again? I don’t want that crap on my computer. Thanks, Mstgr
March 2, 2003 at 4:07 pm #638664AnonymousInactiveYou can find a big list of scum programs here: http://www.spywareguide.com/product_list_full.php
You can learn all about spyware here:
http://www.spywareguide.com/txt_detect.phpYou can download this program for free, it uninstalls the major culprits completely: http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
This program is even more sophisticated:
http://spybot.safer-networking.de/index.php?lang=en&page=newsIf you use Gator, download roboform for free. It will transfer all your Gator info to itself, then you can get rid of Gator with one of the previous program. You CANNOT delete gator on your own, it leaves a small program behind that slowly downloads from gator again until you have the full spyware back on your computer.
Roboform: http://www.roboform.com/If you use Kaza or similair program to download music, replace it with Diet Kaza. Same thing, no scum! http://www.dietk.com/
March 3, 2003 at 1:27 pm #638681vladcizsolMemberSorry for the delayed response. I was out for the weekend.
The current chat room is remotely hosted by Everyone.net they are attempting to load Gator on visitors who login to their chat rooms. They began doing this without notice to anyone using their chat rooms. We are removing the chat room and going with an in-house solution where there will be no scumware popups or force loads.
This is typical of the predatory practices Gator employs and they have the nerve to claim people opt in to receiving their garbage.
I apologize for the inconvenience.
March 3, 2003 at 1:44 pm #638682AnonymousInactiveProfessor, Thank you for your response. I was just concerned and thought you should know. I’m glad there is a solution and also relieved, I was begining to think it was my computer. Thanks again, Mstgr1:D
February 28, 2004 at 2:54 am #645458AnonymousInactiveHey…
Remmeber that slotland post that I created regarding the gator popup from the Slotland affiliate link.
Did you maybe click on that ????
Those details are the same thing that I posted about an email with slotlands link doing the exact same thing!
February 28, 2004 at 2:36 pm #645469AnonymousInactiveMatt, these posts are from back in February.
The problem was, as the professor said, the chat program.
