Venting here. But every week I have to spend valuable time getting rogue affiliates to remove my content they have stolen and scraped and then subsequently use to try and get their shitty affiliate sites to rank in the serps. I know I am one of many many webmasters which have to deal with these pond scum.
As this affects of all of us to varying degrees, perhaps we should use the power of the CAP Community to the greater good. Any ideas and suggestions how we can start to fight back?
March 26, 2006 at 2:35 pm #687098vladcizsolMemberI wholeheartedly agree this is a very aggravating problem. I have no patience or sympathy for thieves.
Unfortunately this is a VERY difficult to combat for a variety of reasons. Probably the number 1 reason is that the people who are doing it ARE thieves. For the most part they don’t CARE if we publically out them or condemn them. If they had an ounce of integrity or conscience they wouldnt be stealing in the first place. It’s also virtually impossible for the programs to combat every instance of this theft or that is all their staffs would be doing 24 hours per day.
If anyone has any ideas on what is PRACTICAL and ACTIONABLE to do on this problem then I am all ears and willing to lend my support.

Scraping is basically bot’s that harvest your content and that is then used on scraper sites to try and rank with your own content.
Professor, I have a few ideas on what we can do. Will you be in Amsterdam next month as I feel it might be worthwhile a few of us getting together in a room/bar to discuss this.
March 26, 2006 at 6:08 pm #687113AnonymousInactiveI’m in. We need to set a time, I am getting very booked.
March 26, 2006 at 10:56 pm #687116vladcizsolMemberNo, unfortunately I do not attend Amsterdam. I will be at CAP Spring break in May, Affiliate Summit in July and CAC in Las Vegas this fall.
March 27, 2006 at 12:12 am #687118AnonymousInactiveWhere is the affiliate summit?
March 27, 2006 at 12:17 am #687119vladcizsolMemberHappily for me its in Orlando :smoker:

Well we all know how I feel about the subject. I am usually polite with scrapers and ask kindly to stop. If that doesn’t work then I contact the ISP the scraper resides on. Then I submitt a spam report to the SE’s. If all all these things fail. Then It get personal, I will email a satelite image to the person in question along with his/her relatives and hand the scraper over to malicious hackers. They love the challenge. these people are theives/criminals they should be treated as such.
Fight back? I would love to see that happen. To be honest I get the feeling alot of people are intimindated by these thugs. For fear of retribution, people often do nothing but watch it happen. Honestly, and I may offend here, no one is up the challenge.
I attack the problem 3 hours a day. I tell you this if something isn’t done soon you will all be losing cash. Some of the scripts I have seen latley are getting better.greek39

I’ll send you a PM.
Professor, maybe this is something we can discuss as a group in Miami as well?
March 27, 2006 at 11:44 am #687137vladcizsolMemberAbsolutely. We can definately carve out some time to do just that.
March 27, 2006 at 1:37 pm #687139AnonymousInactiveWhy do I get the feeling I am being left out or ignored on this subject? Is it something I said or did? If so I would sure like to know. Be open with me and say what you wish. Often I question my no bull-shit adtitude could this be it? Should I drop my membership at CAP? greek39
March 27, 2006 at 1:51 pm #687141AnonymousInactiveGreek,
What are you talking about ? I appreciate your input and assistance here…
March 27, 2006 at 2:09 pm #687143AnonymousInactiveI have made some really good friends here on CAP you being one of them Holis. I enjoy being a active participate and helping whenever time allows. But I have hunch someone thinks I over stepped my bounds, if so I would like the opportunity to defend myself or at least know about it.
I am very active on the scraping issue and yet I get no feedback to my post. I wonder why? is it “I forgot?” My intuition tells me something is up. I received a few odd PM’s last week could this be it? Having questions thrown at me by a CAP scraper I did not like. Trying to keep the peace I retracted everything I said about this person.
I am straight shooter I don’t hide in the brush, I tell it like it is. I do not fear scrapers in the slightless. So I ask is there a problem if so tell me. greek39
March 27, 2006 at 2:30 pm #687144AnonymousInactiveSorry if I came across I was ignoring you Greek, I’m not honest
FWIW I agree with your stance. I believe more of us should be as proactive as you are in dealing with scrapers and others like them, that feed off the hard work of many of us webmasters.

NO! Your input is valued here, well at least as far as I am concerned
