Well, Sen. Backus has certainly cleared things up for me:
Bachus: ?Internet Poker Is The Crack Cocaine of Online Gambling? | Gambling911.com
May 20, 2010 at 2:55 am #810310fintanMemberMan, that’s hilarious. Nobody takes this guy seriously, right? Grandstanding attention-hogs like this don’t actually have supporters, right?
/sarcasm
Anyway, I know Wikipedia isn’t the most reliable source in the world, but all the same, let’s see what it has to say about Rep. Bachus:
“On November 4, 1999, Bachus voted in favor of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act,[3] which some economists, including Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz, believe helped create the 2007 financial crisis. …
“Bachus is a staunch advocate of a federal prohibition of online poker. In 2006, he cosponsored H.R. 4411, the Goodlatte-Leach Internet Gambling Prohibition Act[6] and H.R. 4777, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act.[7] In 2008, he opposed H.R. 5767, the Payment Systems Protection Act (a bill that sought to place a moratorium on enforcement of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act while the U.S. Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve defined “unlawful Internet gambling”).”
May 20, 2010 at 4:14 am #810311fintanMemberThis is along the same lines: The New York Post is saying that Barney Frank’s Internet gambling regulation idea is “worse than the subprime mortgage” crisis.
“The decriminalization of US Internet gambling would fuel a surge among gamblers — perhaps $16 billion-to-$20 billion wagered across the country in the first year it was made legal, according to a recent study — which would devastate the lives of many Americans and jeopardize a fragile economy.”
The article seems to be more of a knee-jerk attack on Barney Frank (surprise, surprise!) than an argument against online gambling, but it’s pretty funny all the same.
And let’s not forget that the New York Post is owned by uber-conservative Rupert Murdoch, the man behind Fox News. Hidden agenda, perhaps? Not-so-hidden, even?

May 21, 2010 at 7:42 am #810334fintanMemberHey, I’m glad you posted it — I was tempted to mention something about it but didn’t really want to give Bachus the press.
