I get a few “hassles” now and then, and I suspect as the Prof stated, that you are most likely to have to endure one or two if you are even mildly successful.
to be honest I figure I get screwed so many different ways from so many different sources, – I can list if you’d care, but just start with the advertising fraud and throw in the scrapers, the people that sign my email address up for …. recently its been Russian spam …. and I keep my email address hidden from harvesters so I’m certain its someone who has taken time out of their … what I’d guess must be a pretty pitiful existence if they have nothing better to do than this sort of stuff ….
and aside from pissing my share of people off at poker tournaments,… and they know me as another domain name/ID than most know me here, … so I’d know if the hassles were coming from that direction because I’d get the spam to that domain’s address ….
I don’t think I’ve ever done anything to anybody to warrant them wishing bad things on me,… or that they’d even have taken notice of me at all…
aside from speaking out against IMHO unscrupulous programs … mostly here. So ya I’d say its a good chance that you’ve found an “admirer” here.
The fact that these things happen are not in any way the fault of CAP, as these creeps would find there way into any place that successful webmasters would gather. That’s a given IMHO. And I think the Prof does an incredible job of keeping things to a minimum. More than I would, I must confess, because I’d figure that it comes with the territory. You almost have to … if you’ve any kind of experience.
What makes the net great, is also what makes it awful. And in fact, we all are successful BECAUSE of the grey areas created by the net, so its hard to bitch too much about things when you know you wouldn’t be where you are today if not for these special circumstances.
So friend go with the knowledge that others have gone before you, endured. Even thrived.
But ya it sucks our niche is still apparently occupied by such small minds that they’d rather spend their time doing unconstructive BS instead of taking advantage of the huge opportunity that lies before them.
January 23, 2006 at 8:20 pm #681626AnonymousInactiveIt’s a pain and I have been hassled and shafted, stabbed in the back and slandered to aff programs from many directions for years.
I know where I picked up one set of “admirers”, and it took years for them to simmer down. I still get to “savor some presents” they sent my way, such as various porn subscriptions that flood some of my addresses at the rate of ten to 15 every minute of the day. I didn’t change the adresses even – I refuse to. I just created folders for this crap and once in a while toss the stuff.
The part I hate most is the people who pretend to be my good friends and go around behind my back and slander me to aff programs. Just because I don’t do anything about it doesn’t mean I don’t know every detail about it. Best to keep my enemies close.
In the end, as long as people don’t manage to destroy your sites, they don’t really hurt you. The aff programs respond best to Dollar amounts, and it doesn’t matter one bit to them who says what about whom.
If however someone destroyed my property, I would be on them like a ton of bricks.
January 23, 2006 at 10:25 pm #681659AnonymousInactiveThey also confirmed that someone complained that the telephone number on my whois record was invalid – which was the case – I don’t like my phone number being on the net.
This person must know you well to know phone number is incorrect..
As far as neteller.. I had someone try and hack into my neteller account.. The good thing about neteller is they track all attempted and actual log in’s.. Ask them to send you the history. They have all ips.
This is what I did, traced the ip back to the person who was hacking and had the police show up on their doorstep..
With neteller if they know your account number and secure id, they can try like 3 to 5 times to figure out password. If they get it wrong in those attempts neteller will auto send a reminder on password. This is how I caught the person trying to hack into my account.
January 23, 2006 at 10:43 pm #681663AnonymousInactiveI don’t like talking about it much always keep in mind only stupid malicious hackers get caught. Tracking the IP can be sometimes useless because most high end malicious hackers ride the train through t-1 connections.
Case in point even though neteller would have a a log of IP’S they could be useless. But if you know the community of hackers you can usually catch the person.
Know the difference between hacker, malicious hacker/ cracker(old school)

Well you never know.. If they used a ip not located in same country as the neteller account holder, neteller would have locked the account.
So depending if the person trying to get into his neteller was a actually hacker or just a person trying to do damage. Always worth it to check it out.

January 24, 2006 at 1:46 am #681690vladcizsolMemberSomeone is attacking Jeff from Wager Profits account here at CAP, so even prorgams arent immune to harrassment from assholes.
