Just to keep this discussion going (off0topic though it is) …

    Alexa holds 2 metrics.

Estimated visitor percentage of the internet and average pages read per visitor.

The ranking seems to be some sort of sliding scale of the two.

If you get a lot of visitors through an article on digg or such-like and they only read the page they’re on before leaving then they force down the average pages – and that negatively affects the rank.

Looking at Ogpaper.com the daily reach (on the graph) seems consistant to some sort of pattern – it looks like you have a weekly cycle?

But the page views seem to be the issue causing a lower than expeted rank?
    Somewhere between 1.3 and 2.1 ?

See, that’s the thing – we dont have a cycle. But looking at Alexa, I can see why you’d think that. And we don’t have unstable traffic, except Saturday morning, which is understandable. :drunk2:

Basically, Alexa paints a picture of our website which is absolutely worng, if you could peak into our stats. Alexa is definitelly a “webmaster thing”, as every now and then I may post something here which seems to be contrary to the general opinion, and I can see our Alexa ranking jumping thanks to all the webmasters visiting us through my sig to see “who the hell is this guy”…

Perhaps you’re just more interesting on weekends when people have more time?

I recognise my trends in the stats – and find the country data for GoonersGuide.com details useful … backing up my ideas which countries like to have a sports bet.

(see http://info.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?url=goonersguide.com and then click on the more links )

I find this data useful – but if your traffic source is all local then I guess it’s not.

The labrat sites don’t have that weekly waiver – it’s pretty solid – and they get traffic from israel and costa rica – which reflects the interest segments of those sites.

Overall – I just find it useful – even if the picture is somewhat distorted.
    :hattip:
