this is a pretty huge sporting event, will it have much appeal to sports punters and should affiliates be pushing this, or concentrate thier efforts on the start of the football season?
answers on a post card.
on maybe just a reply to this thread!August 6, 2008 at 5:07 pm #774844akcov68MemberHi Hanford,
While the Olympics is a big sporting event, the start of the European football leagues should be a bigger event for sports betting.
Many Olympians are not professional athletes, and therefore, it is not as attractive to certain types of punters, particularly educated ones.
However, it can be a good opportunity to cash in on bettors who are organically searching for general information about the Olympics or bettors who want to bet on a particular country.
Hope that this helps! :hattip:
August 6, 2008 at 7:36 pm #774859HVDBMemberIndeed. People are looking for Athletes that have chances for a medal and are looking for previews. If you can provide them with reliable info about a sport and write a preview you can attach text like: “you think the USA Dream Team can beat them all? Open a account, get 30 free and bet on the USA!” I bet that will attract alot of people that normally wouldn’t bet but as it’s such a big tv event get interested in having a bet on their favorite athlete or team! And meanwhile you can start putting energy in the start of the competition but the Olympics are def. worth mentioning esp. if you have a attractive banner for it (and not the ‘hardcore’ GET ** FREE)
August 7, 2008 at 11:39 am #774916yleewolfMemberthanks for your thoughts guys. I guess it will have similar pull to recreational punters who may back their national team in a world cup, following their passion for it, but not really following what might be a sensiable bet.
but obviously no where near that level of interest
August 7, 2008 at 11:55 am #774921CharlesWFMemberHi Hanford
We are getting some interest in Olympics betting but the hype hasnt really got going and until the marathon of the opening ceromony is out the way it probably wont…
Once a couple of GB athletes put in some decent performances I expect the interest to rocket.
I’ll be having a bet for sure – some of the events are a bit dull without a punt!

I could not resist the temptation here. So Richard you are not expecting much interest then :roflmao:
August 7, 2008 at 4:05 pm #774940yleewolfMemberJamie – Canada? doesnt that have drugs and no results all over it?
tee heeback to the point, thanks Rich, i hope that interest is coming our way, i’ll keep a look out!
August 7, 2008 at 4:06 pm #774941CharlesWFMemberlol maybe not then but I hear we have the triple jump sewn up again this year
August 7, 2008 at 4:14 pm #774944AnonymousInactiveLOL – the best thing to come out of Canada is the artist Snow (informer)
We hope that the Olympics does spark some interest with bettors. Personally, I am looking forward to the mens 100m.
August 7, 2008 at 4:17 pm #774946queriesresolvedMemberHi Hanford,
You should do alright, we see the big winners being the bookies who have the ‘think globally act locally’ approach cleaning up on this one.
Saying that I have not seen many SB Olympic banners around
Richard – The Olympics are insanely promoted in North America, in the UK we hardly know where or when they are. This is the reason for our lack “winning” – now if there was some kind of Judge panel athletes would get feedback from (the Olympic Idols) then we would kick it!

August 8, 2008 at 12:36 pm #775055AnonymousInactiveTh olympics attracts a different kind of bettor. Even though bets will be placed on the olympics they probably will be bets like;
Who will win the most medals?
How many medals will the UK win?Proposition betting will be big during the olympics but actual money going through the doors to the sportsbook is going to questionable in size and small.
It is rightly said that betting on the NFL is big and is what all affiliates are gearing up towards.
However is does not hurt to make some money from olympic betting during August as the real football season does not start till September. So affiliates would be crazy to try and not capitalize by having some olympic banners on their websites during this month.

Thanks for your thoughts Simon.
By football i was refering to the “Soccer” season which is pretty much kicking off Europe wide in the next week or two. We starting to see affiliates pushing the olympics though so we should get the best of both worlds!August 8, 2008 at 2:15 pm #775071AnonymousInactiveBoth football seasons are kicking off very soon so we should see as you say the best of both worlds. I would be interested for affiliates to post back and let me know in two weeks time how they are doing for the Olympics.
August 8, 2008 at 4:41 pm #775092AnonymousInactiveJust wanted to add that Las Vegas is not accepting Olympics bets, so this might drive more people into betting online?:tooconfus
Cheers,
