I have approximately 500 members at my site, mostly these are made up of about 90% on the forum and 10% on an old mailing list (A lot are duplicated – the 10% are ones that never joined the forum)
My site is predominantly Poker players however I have been introuding the casino, blackjack and bingo programs.The question I have is that I am thinking of starting a good quality newsletter, I do not really want to spend the money on a template or online services as I have all the tools and time to do my own. Does anyone have any recommendations of;
How often
How much content
Should I be using an online service or not for thisThanks in advance for your replies

I have seen some good results with feedburner, it’s quite simple. But if you want to go your own root once a week I would say would be a max, it depends on how active your users are, but keep track of the unsubscribe rate and try to use the newsletter as a real selling and referral (get them to pass the newsletter on) tool.
Newsletters don’t have to be lengthy, a well written hot article (with a catchy headline) with a few links to some of your key buying pages should do the trick, then play around to see what works. If you can I would try to get the links tracked so you can analyze the metrics.

I think we are going to initially trial it on a monthly basis, I will look into feedburner as well, thanks for the tips, they are much appreciated
