MP Calls for UK to Pressure US Over iGaming Laws
    By philip

Labour MP, Tony Banks, has challenged the UK government to apply pressure on the US to rethink its Internet gambling laws, New Media Zero reports. Speaking at Monday’s debate at the House of Commons, Banks who sat on the original Gambling Bill scrutiny committee and is its vigorous supporter, stated: ‘We should try to persuade the US to bring its gambling laws up to date.’

Banks, who praised the Bills efforts to regulate online gaming added, ‘It’s wrong that the Americans should have the right to refuse a business operation based in London, Gibraltar or elsewhere, and we should push them hard on that. If they’re to have access to our gambling industry, we should insist that they bring their laws in line with ours.’

The call came in the same week that the US administration further dug its heels in on the issue, reiterating that, should the World Trade Organisation once more rule in favour of Antigua in the ongoing iGaming dispute between the two countries, they would immediately appeal.

Last year the WTO upheld a complaint by the tiny Caribbean Island that the US stance contravenes fair trading laws. “The WTO has not yet ruled. But the U.S. will look at the ruling and may appeal if the decision goes against it,’ explained Mary Ellen Gilroy, U.S. deputy chief of mission to Eastern Caribbean countries.
