In six cases, Democratic votes flipped to GOP

WINFIELD, W.Va. — Three Putnam County voters say electronic voting machines changed their votes from Democrats to Republicans when they cast early ballots last week. This is the second West Virginia county where voters have reported this problem.

Last week, three voters in Jackson County told The Charleston Gazette their electronic vote for “Barack Obama” kept flipping to “John McCain”.

In both counties, Republicans are responsible for overseeing elections. Both county clerks said the problem is isolated.

They also blamed voters for not being more careful.

“People make mistakes more than machines,” said Jackson County Clerk Jeff Waybright.

Shelba Ketchum, a 69-year-old nurse retired from Thomas Memorial Hospital, described what happened Friday at the Putnam County Courthouse in Winfield.

“I pushed buttons and they all came up Republican,” she said. “I hit Obama and it switched to McCain. I am really concerned about that. If McCain wins, there was something wrong with the machines.

“I asked them for a printout of my votes,” Ketchum said. “But they said it was in the machine and I could not get it. I did not feel right when I left the courthouse. My son felt the same way.

“I heard from some other people they also had trouble. But no one in there knew how to fix it,” said Ketchum, who is not related to Menis Ketchum, a Democratic Supreme Court candidate.

Ketchum’s son, Chris, said he had the same problem. And Bobbi Oates of Scott Depot said her vote for incumbent Democratic Sen. John D. Rockefeller was switched to GOP opponent Jay Wolfe.

“I touched the one I wanted, Rockefeller, and the machine put a checkmark on the Republican instead,” Oates said of her experience Thursday.

She said she caught the mistake, called over a worker in the county clerk’s office and was able to correct her vote. But she worries other voters may not catch such a mistake.

When asked if she is sure she touched the box for Rockefeller, she said, “I’m absolutely positive.”

Putnam County Clerk Brian Wood said on Saturday that he is upset there are “so many negative stories out there and not enough positive ones. We want people to vote. People need to know the facts.

“But we haven’t had any major issues. We try to explain to voters how the machines work then they come in,” Wood said.

In Putnam County, early voters have the option of asking for either touch-screen machines or optical scan ballots — paper ballots on which people mark in their election choices.

Wood said some voters might not realize that touch-screen voting machines may take a few seconds to record their choices.

Let’s guess…. machines made by Diebold?

Yep, we really need these computerized ballots, with no audit trail, so that more votes can be sold. God forbid they should use paper ballots.

My bank has a new state of the art diebold ATM. The thing is awesome. The buttons are extra large for accessibility and the touch screen works flawlessly. Hard to believe they can’t make computerized voting work with sufficient back up and a paper trail.

my mate said to me “I hope they get that fixed before election day”

I replied, “I think it’s been ‘fixed’ since last election day”.

why is it that they are allowed to get away with this? there should be paper receipts to about 3 different and separate entities.

they have everything else done in triplicate and I shudder every day to think how many trees get hacked down to provide paper back up to some of the most idiotic reasons including people scanning pictures of their ass on a copier (that’s okay if you’re a girl, in fact it is encouraged and I have it on good authority that the trees actually like giving their lives so you can send ME copies … but that’s a story for another day)

anyway the one most important event in our collective lives that comes around once every 4 years … we can’t be wasting paper on that.

give me a break. I just want to know what scumbag is the one to put the finger on their chest about this matter and about a lot of other matters too.

while on the subject, I’ll tell you how to fix the system.

The only thing wrong with the “system” is that somewhere along the line we stopped putting people in jobs that had headings like “in charge of finance” and went to headings like “secretary of finance” like they are just there to take dictation. Or I love the word “advisor”. Give me back titles like “in charge” … or how about “if you got a problem then I’m the one to see”. Lets change the titles to something like that so we know who needs a good tar and feather bath.

if they’d do that this system would fix itself pretty darn quick.

People have been saying it for a long time now how nobody is taking responsibility for their actions and instead want to blame what they do on their genes or their environment and we’ve let it spill over into areas that were created to demand accountability which without we get what we have now.
