Google’s MayDay change has gone unnoticed by many, but amounted to a catastrophe to some affiliate marketers. Here’s what happened, and how the damage can be fixed. (Thanks to RomePartners for some of this info.)
Have you seen any damage to your search engine rankings over the past eight weeks or so because of this “mayday” update? It reportedly hit eCommerce sites the hardest, which doesn’t really apply to online gambling affiliates, but I’ve heard some negative reports from the casino world as well.

They seem to have lost their way at times, since many of their changes play right in the hands of spammers. They certainly aren’t the company that they used to be (and this is reflected in their share price).

WTF is going on? A couple of weeks about one of my keyword phrases all but hit the road on google (same with the site). No Problem – that happens from time to time – re-indexing, old indexes go up while they fiddle with the latest and greatest algo. I was getting crawled by google for 1/2 hour, 45 mins ect. about 2 minutes ago I’m back to number 1 with one of my other sites at number 2 – for how long? who knows.
3 different results with netscape (I know – but I still like it) Safari and firefoxanyone else see the same thing?
I also loved that all of the edu. casino pages were back at the top of the listings AND so were a whole bunch of 404 pages

Google is all over the map, I agree. It’s really hard to figure out what’s going on over there these days. It seems like these algorithm shift are capricious and arbitrary, with the net result being negative. This company is no longer the dominant behemoth in the industry, IMO.

And after a couple weeks the big dip doesn’t show on the monthly graph anymore at all, like it never existed in the first place. That’s the weird part. Why would the record of it disappear?
