Not sure if there’s another (more appropriate) forum for this topic – couldn’t see one. If there is, feel free to move it.

I’m looking to move one of my sites’ hosting from shared to dedicated. I need it to be managed, dedicated ideally as I want all the security patches, etc. pre-installed.

I currently use Pipex for one dedicated hosting package and pay approx. £90 monthly. Had a chat with Rackspace today and, whilst they impressed me, they’re looking for £250 monthly.

Any suggestions? I’m looking for a GOOD uptime record and ideally costs of no more than £150/$300 pcm.

If it really needs to be managed dedicated hosting http://www.hosting.com seem to have a fairly flexible range at a fair price.
If you want a near dedicated solution http://www.dreamhost.com offers packages that offer huge bandwidth which increases every month.

I wholeheartedly recommend http://www.coreix.net . Based in the UK. Quality fast efficient support 24/7. I just upgraded the server I have with them. They offer a vast array of services and hosting solutions.

    Fiction,

I have had difficulty in the past with hosts. I have had serious success as have others here at CAP : http://www.mojohost.com

Since I have been with them over a year now i have had zero problems. In fact they have bent over backwards for me debugging scripts that didnt transfer properly, etc… things you wont get most hosts to do.

Never notice downtime , great machines, awesome service mostly dealing with very knowledgeable owners watching out for their company 24hour emergency support (they wear pagers to bed, no kidding)

Managed top of the line machine is about $200USD per month fully managed

Thanks for that. I haven’t yet had chance to sort this out so I’m going to take a good look at all those mentioned this week.

Can someone tell me if I am making an error in judgement by using godaddys shared hosting. All this dedicated talk is starting to make me wonder. I have read recentely that other sites on your shared hosting that get penalized could affect your site, but many think that is a fallacy. I guess I am just wondering the benefits for a dedicated server like you all are talking about. Thanks in advance for any insight.

imo you can do far better than godaddy. They are just way too big to really give a toss (again imo). Plus your probably stuck on a server sharing it with 100K of sites if not more.

I’m at that point where I have 4 domains and two hosting packages, with another domain on the horizon and another hosting package to come. I’m seriously looking at hooking up with either a semi-dedicated or a dedicated server.

The reason I’ve stuck with virtual for so long is that my skill set for unix boxes are pretty lame. Taking on a dedicated server actually scares me (can I say that without sound like a tool?).

Currently I’m hosting with http:http://www.gatorhost.com and they’ve been excellent. Always there 24/7 and contactable by live chat too. Even go so far a fixing a few php errors, altering my php.ini file and also adding mod_security patches to keep out hackers.

I’m pretty impressed with them really. Think I’m paying about $15 a month.

    Cheers

Managed is such a abused term these days…I am guessing you want someone to handle things like software upgrades, security patching and so on or do you require more?

With any server provider you should get a fully installed server with the necessary security and software unless the provider specificly state its a “blank server”.

There are other aspects you should consider when getting a dedicated server based on your needs:

    • Uptime – Should always be in the 98,5%+ and usually is closer to 99.7% for most DC’s
    • Support – A good provider should not need to give you any support, it should all be working 24/7, but in case you want to ge in touch you need to figure out what level of support you need.
    • Backups – What kind of backup system do need and how is it managed. Is it using RAID to mirror things on a second disc, or is another system in place. Find out how things work in case “worst-case-scenario” comes around and what solutions are available.
    • Processor – What kind of processor do you need to handle your websites. Can a lower level machine handle it or do you require a dual core machine?
    • Memory – how much memmory do you require from the start and how much does it cost to upgrade down the line?
    • Established Data Center – where it is located , security facilities they use, and do they host high-risk clients like porn and IRC on the same network that can cause disruptions?
    • Acceptable Use Policy(AUP) and Terms of Service (TOS) – whats permitted and what is not?

As you can see there are a lot of considerations to look at :)

I am currently getting a UK server setup with unitedhosting and i have heard nothing but good things about them. Fully managed, top spec for £229 a month, UK servers tend to cost more than servers in the US. With managed servers you need to look at the small print because some only provide so many hours a month and anything after that you have to pay for.

I own 1 server with http://www.layeredtech.com/ and there are pretty good i use the unmanaged with https://www.platinumservermanagement.com/ as our server admins which lets us just get on with the running of everything.

There prices if you go unmanaged are not to bad IMHO.

Sut as said in past posts do research before choosing read reviews what may be good for one person may not be for you.

    I’m with Blackhawk on http://www.mojohost.com

I’ve been with them since they started ( was one of their first 5 server’s ) and have never had reason to change or seek other hosting.

I’ve known the owners since before they were in the hosting business, and they have become good friends. Great staff, and very comprehensive.

    They are the best!
