I know most links are good but I’m wondering do search engines see links in with and out the www differently? Does it make a difference?
February 6, 2008 at 6:38 am #760183AnonymousInactiveIt makes a difference if you don’t have one of the two versions of your URL 301’ed to the other. But if you’ve got your redirect in place, then nah, it doesn’t matter.
BTW, the site in your signature does not have the 301 redirect in place, so this can and probably will cause ranking problems for your site.

Thanks very much. There weren’t many threads in this section so I didn’t even think it would be covered! I’m in the same situation as you… i’ll need to ask host for .htaccess to be adjusted..

There is another solution. You can go directly to google and set the preferred address (i.e. with or without the www).
Go to google webmaster tools -> Login -> Dashboard -> Tools -> Set Preferred Domain.
“The preferred domain is the one that you would liked used to index your site’s pages (sometimes this is referred to as the canonical domain). Links may point to your site using both the www and non-www versions of the URL (for instance, http://www.example.com and http://example.com). The preferred domain is the version that you want used for your site in the search results.
Once you tell us your preferred domain name, it may help us determine PageRank for your site more accurately.”
