Linking and Bad Neighborhoods

kwblue asked 4 years ago
Hey guys,

How can you tell if a site is part of a ‘bad neighborhood’? I tried to find this out, but it seems that a lot of the information out there points to ‘gambling’ sites as bad neighborhoods <span title=” title=”” class=”bbcode_smiley” />

I really want some way to determine this. For example, I was told by another webmaster that one of my links is to a site in a bad neighborhood. However, that site looks fine to me and has a Google PR of 5.

Also, it looks like another site (also a PR5) took my link down and I gave them a very prominent link! Piss me off.

Any site that employs any black hat techniques or links to any sites that do or even links to way too many sites to keep track of is a bad neighborhood.

Most of the link solicitations you get in the mail are from bad neighborhoods of some sort.

My understanding is that bad neighborhoods=Google banned sites. I’ve read alot of posts about gambling sites being “bad neighborhoods” too, but it doesn’t jive with the SERPs for gambling terms. Google definitely rewards gambling webmasters for gambling related terms. Maybe people posting about our sites in general SEO forums are saying people in our industry tend to employ more black hat techniques than in other industries, so therefore beware of any gambling sites. Not really sure, just guessing.

As for checking a Google banned site, the easiest way to do that is to check their PR. If the Google toolbar is gray (meaning PR0), then the site might be banned, otherwise it is brand new, or hasn’t been indexed. This is one reason why it is very hard for a new webmaster to get links off the bat with no PR showing.

Yeah, this site doesn’t have the greyed out PR box or a PR0… it is PR5. However, Google does not list them whatsoever.. So I am assuming that they have been penalized AFTER the PR update.

Not sure.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you need to see if the site is indexed by Google. If it is not indexed then it is either brand new or banned. Just going by PR is questionable, as my toolbar often doesn’t show PR when there is.
