UK newspaper The Telegraph reports that Ladbrokes is exploring the possibility of a potential GBP 2.2 billion merger with internet software provider, Playtech .
Ladbrokes is currently in separate discussions with 888 Holdings Plc on a potential GBP 240 million takeover bid.
The UK-based bookmaker has reportedly instructed investment banks Greenhill & UBS AG to explore a possible tie-up between the two companies which would transform Ladbrokes from a consumer-facing business, with more than 2,700 betting shops, to one that also supplies software & online games to the betting, casino & poker industries.
Unbelievable if this happens. Would be very interested to be a fly on the wall in the MGS Offices in the Isle of Man right now. As Ladbrokes are their biggest operator.

February 9, 2011 at 8:06 pm #814635AnonymousInactivePlaytech has been making huge inroads development and business wise for the past 3 years, and more so in the last 2 years.
I think they are gearing themselves up for the US market when it opens up.
February 10, 2011 at 9:15 am #814646AnonymousInactiveNot sure how exactly this would come off. This is what I posted on my wall on facebook:
This is intreresting on so many levels. Firstly Microgaming, won’t be too thrilled seeing their largest client merging with their biggest competitor.
Then there is the small fact of William Hill Online and Playtech having a financial tie in….
I would be surprised if there is much mileage in this story. But, if there is, how on earth will this come about?

Victor Chandler as well I think? One thing that Playtech provides over MGS is a strong poker network, and I believe they have launched a sportsbook as well?

I think the biggest potential problem is that Playtech has so many ties with Ladbrokes competitors, as you guys pointed out.
I wrote a piece about it for the CAP News page: Ladbrokes and Playtech in Potential Merger
