I was just wondering if Google discriminates against hyphenated domain names?

    mywebsite.com / my-web-site.com

Taking only the two domains above, which would Google like better, excluding content and server location?

we own some sites with — that rank well for keywords so i would say it does not matter :)

I once heard that Google counts the hyphen as a space. Our URL, http://www.market-ace.com has a lovely hyphen in the middle! Analytics shows that we get inbound requests both “market ace”, which goes some way to demonstrate this, as we never spell the company name without the hyphen.

That said, with some domains that don’t have hyphens, Google will still return results. You can see this by entering “jackpot joy” into Google. This returns http://www.jackpotjoy.com, which doesn’t actually have a space in the URL.

It really won’t matter that much to Google, especially in this industry. You need to build so many links to your site that the domain name hardly has any bearing on rankings. That said, the dash or underscore acts as a space in Google’s eyes, so they can parse out the words in the domain better, so technically the domain with the dashes in it would be better for SEO, but again any benefit would be very marginal.
