    Opiemarket,

I appreciate ALL the information you’ve given me! This thread alone has taught me a lot. The links you provided definitely filled in the gaps for some other questions I would have eventually found myself asking.

    much MUCH mahalos.

Host: Along with the Special hosting package you will receive 1 dedicated IP address
Me: 1 IP for all sites I add
Host: One dedicated and one shred

There was a time I was happy with my 5 sites and 5 different plans! :happydanc

    Can someone explain shred?

    4flush…sounds like a typo.
From what I can tell they meant Host: One dedicated and one shared

I don’t have any recommendations for a particular hosting company but I like to host in Canada or the UK. Not because of worries about the US government’s attitude to online gambling (I’m a UK citizen so that isn’t a problem for me) but because the geographical location of your server affects your presence in their search engines.

I want that Google.ca and Yahoo.ca traffic in addition to the regular Google.com traffic, so I host in Canada for sites that work in US dollars. Works for me.

Yes. I’ve read that geographical location of your server is another criterion to consider when host shopping as it can affect download time as well.

I consider the host’s uptime. Alexa gives the speed of a site/server for what it’s worth. Actually, a host may be in one location, but depending on what banners, stat counters, etc… a bunch of servers can be involved. Sometimes it’s better to save banners locally and link them than have them served remotely.

You wont find an honest answer in any host review site. Recently Dreamhost done a test with one and found they were willing to put dreamhost at the top of there list if they paid $900 :dajudge:

Search on WHT.com or Google once you find something that meets your requirments wait till its say 2am there time and email support a question or attempt live chat that way you can see what responses you get out of hours if your sites ever crash.

3 i can say are pretty decent.

    fuse9.net
    wirenine.com
    hostgator.com

    There in no particular order.

Hey KPR…I think I just welcomed you to the board today?

Don’t believe everything you read from a host talking about review sites!!!
Trust me there are two sides to every story. Many of the affiliates here have “gambling review” sites…so they know the game with respect to deals & special positioning. I’ve read some of the casino reviews from some of the members in this forum!! :happydanc

The information presented here is for the members of the forum..to help them with hosting questions….

    1) Wirenine.com hosts only 781 domains and is not a player
    2) Fuse9.net is not a player and hosts just over 100 domains.
    3) HostGator specializes in reseller hosting and they are good. Brent the owner has a fast growing business there and is trying to keep up with growing demand levels. He is hosting now over 90,000 domains.

FYI…just because a web host answers a support call in the middle of the night does not make it a good webhost. 90+% of all support calls for North American hosts are between 8am – 8pm eastern. For most of the sites we own the traffic also falls in line with these hours of operation…so I would rather have a host support me more with good resources on peak hours than after hours.

Slotplayer also makes a good point…just because the host is physically located in one geography does not mean all their servers are in that geography or assigned local IP addresses. Many hosts, such as Canadian based hosts have a few servers in Canada with the majority being located in the USA due to significant cost savings.

I do agree that if you are targeting a certain geography it would be nice to have a server in that geography…but I think IMHO that there is more weight factored on the domain name. For example, more weight factored in for .ca names if you were targeting Canada.

The Alexa server analysis is flawed for web hosts as it is not taking into account individual server uptime. If you reside on a shared hosting server that has one person dragging down the processor(s) and using all the resources, ALL the domains on that shared server will be affected. This is why load balancing and redundancy servers are important for a shared web host something that the majority of the “off-the-shelf” hosting control panels do not have.

Therefore, you could be a client of a shared hosting company that has 300 servers and 299 of those servers are great (and the review sites say that the web host is the best)…and “your” server has a “spammer” or like customer on it…you will have a bad experience with that server unless the host has measures put in place to stop the activity from the bad client. Too often than not, most of the clients on that one server are pissed because all they see is their websites and email are down…they get mad at the web host because they are down and want 99.99% uptime like their telephone for their $5.95/mo fee. They think the webhost is terrible..and start flaming the internet with bad news about their experience with that host. Even though that host 99% of the time is a good host.

All good points opiemarket and yes you did welcome me today thanks.

My point is if a host has 24/7 support great if not then why not is it a one man operation. As for fuse9 and wirenine i did not know they only host that amount but i do know there respected members of the host community hence i mentioned them.

Another i have known to get good reviews is http://dotable.com owned by aussie bob.

Well thats just my 2cents :D

Well said KPR…24/7 support is definelty a good option…but many of the good shared hosts still only have extended support hours and not 24/7 for customer support.

Just make sure you get a host with support….even if it is a one man shop!! :D Actually, we had a REALLY good one-man shop that we used locally for a couple of years in the early days and his service was excellent. I guess you never know.

Aussie Bob is a good guy..I’m sure his reviews are good too..I forgot he launched that review site earlier this year. I used his httpme reseller service for a while when he owned it…and one of the hosts we currently use is Bluewho which is also a take off of that service. Speaking of being put on a bad server…we were on a Bluewho CPanel server that was TERRIBLE for some time. There was one guy who was running some scripts everyday at noon…and the whole server would basically crash everyday at noon for 20-40 minutes. This went on for around 2 months until they caught they guy. This is the issue with shared hosting or reseller hosting for that matter. Bluewho is still a decent company though…just got put on a bad box.
