September 30, 2004 at 3:45 pm #655621AnonymousInactiveDo you know what this person gets out of giving these away free? How do they make their money. I follow the old motto “if it sounds to good to be true than it probably is not true”
They may wait till you start driving traffic and take it back as they have ultimate control. Just my thoughts.

September 30, 2004 at 3:58 pm #655622AnonymousInactiveI guess it’s a publicity stunt and by doing this they obtain new customers and business.. you see it’s only for a year.. now if you get it going nicely you will be there many years buying more domains and paying for the old ones every year. I think MyDomain.com is a trustworthy company and thus I think there’s no catch.
Will this “hurt” them in a short run… will it help them in the long run? Most definetly.
Here’s a text from their site:
Dear MyDomain Customers,
It doesn’t get much better than this. Order between now and Tuesday October 5th, and get up to 25 FREE single year .INFO registrations! Click here to begin!
No Strings – No Catches
No Joke!Every MyDomain customer is entitled to 25 FREE .INFO domains (1-year registrations). In fact, anyone who visits MyDomain is entitled to this deal. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell everyone!
Whatever you do, don’t wait. We expect this deal to be very popular and good .info names should go fast. Get yours while the best ones are still available.
To take advantage of this deal, just register the domains like normal and use the yr. dropdown to select “Free 1 yr.” in the shopping cart (see the image below). The price for your first 25 .info names will be $0 (1- year registrations). You’ll receive the same service and support that you would if you had purchased the names.
EXTRA RULES:
* – This promotion is valid for up to 25 free .info domains per customer. Any domains purchased for free that exceed the 25 per customer limit will be deleted from our system and any corresponding services (hosting, email, etc.) will not function with that domain name. Registrant information for any account registering free .info domains may not be modified until January 1st, 2005.
September 30, 2004 at 9:11 pm #655627AnonymousInactiveMike, it looks like a good deal and I signed up for several names before reading the agreement. Can you or someone tell me it is typical. I am new at this and wondering if I would be alright going with them. Am I reading this correctly when I assume they are saying they own the rights to any domain name I use thru them no matter how long? Also, can they place thier own pop-up adds and banners on any site I use thru them. I am hoping someone with the experience I do not have can give me some advice.
September 30, 2004 at 9:15 pm #655628AnonymousInactiveP.S. I want domain names and webhosts that allow me to own what I get and control my movement and adds and banners. I do not mind paying, but again am new. did I mess up signing up for these free programs or should I be able to get out of them if I choose at no obligation. Thanks for any help…Tim
September 30, 2004 at 9:27 pm #655629AnonymousInactiveAlso is this typical. I usually erase my cookies…
Your session has expired.
Why does my session expire?
Sessions expire for two reasons:
1. For your security, your session expires a maximum of 2 hours after your last site access.
2. If you do not accept the cookies set on login or your computer is not configured to accept cookies, your session will expire almost immediately. We use cookies (small pieces of site information) to assist us in user authentication and in saving configuration information. Turn off any third party programs or control panels that automatically reject cookies.September 30, 2004 at 9:39 pm #655631AnonymousInactiveThese are domains as usual and MyDomain.com is a normal domain registrar so dont worry about any of that. The only thing is that you cannot move it before 2005, but naturally you can host the site(s) anywhere you like. Just set the nameservers accordingly.
About those cookies.. well that ain’t my speciality so I cant begin to guess whats up with that, but the site works fine for me.. allthough a bit busy right now.. wonder why
September 30, 2004 at 9:48 pm #655634AnonymousInactiveI turned off the third party deleting cookies, my fault…Thanks for the help…
September 30, 2004 at 9:51 pm #655635AnonymousInactivemy fault
September 30, 2004 at 9:54 pm #655636AnonymousInactiveMike, thanks my friend. As I said, I am still learning, so I get ansy when I act before I look. I appreciate your response. Do you use them for other services such as webhosting and such?
September 30, 2004 at 10:08 pm #655638AnonymousInactiveHi Timbo
No I don’t use them for other than registering domains and quite frankly I have been using GoDaddy for that lately, but you never know.. maybe I will get back to using MyDomain because of this stunt they pulled.
September 30, 2004 at 10:13 pm #655639AnonymousInactiveThanks Mika, you have set my mind at ease. I suppose I shpould sit back and learn more before acting all crazy, just anxious to get going. I apprecite the help my friend…GOOD LUCK TO YOU…
September 30, 2004 at 10:20 pm #655640AnonymousInactiveMany places use cookies to identify you, and for all of those the warning you posted is standard.
September 30, 2004 at 10:32 pm #655643AnonymousInactiveDominique, thanks to you also. I had been told to use a third party to erase my cookies, but not sure why now that I think about it. I just need to chill abit. Mike set my mind at ease and now you as well. I have been following you both along with other from behind the scenes and value what you both say. I appreciate your help…GOOD LUCK MY FRIENDS…

In 2-3 years I am sure they will see a profit.
Timbo:
No registar can put banners, text-links, pop-ups blah blah blah on your websites. Your host is the one who can do that. And even then your host will only put banners/text-links on your websites if you are using a free-hosting feature. -
