What do you think of folks who post in your forum just to put get their own affiliate site link in front of your community members?

Would you think this was too harsh a reaction: when Mr Forum Spammer posts his link, go to his site, note who he promotes, contact one or more of those casinos/poker rooms and let them know that the operator of Ispamforums dot com is spamming forums? Nearly all affiliate program T&Cs prohibit spamming. Would it be too severe to turn a spammer in to his affiliate managers?

I would disable signatures in the forum software for new users if I were you.
If they add to the conversation (so not spamming with “interesting”, “nice idea” and such bullshits) then they can stay, without posting their links it will turn out if they are there for the community or just for the link love or player poaching.
Might be a good idea to set up a new member group for your forum and every new member stays in that group until they demonstrate that they are not there only for the links and for the players. Disable posting links, signatures, etc for this group. Your players won’t post links I’m sure, so they won’t suffer from this barrier.

If they are spamming, then it is the same as other form of spamming, and get in touch with their aff manager.

get a no links plugin for your forum (set it so users w/ <50 posts can't post links or send pms imo)

also consider using nofollow on your forum links, and mention it in the signup.. it might stop spammers signing up.

The problem I am finding is a little piece of software called xrumer :( It is a spam bot which can post to vBulletin.. It has hit AGD and GPWA for sure. Not sure about CAP.

They typically post small replies to existing posts and use a signature link. Replies like ‘bump’ or ‘my 2 centsbump’ and crap like that are common, but of course that probably depends on how the idiot set up the software.

I have a hack which forces users to post at least 15 times prior to signatures being active and I have removed the ability to see signatures elsewhere to keep the linkbacks from happening.

It’s a real pain in the butt lately.

The software can hit a variety of forums, including (from their details page): phpBB and PHP-Nuke with any modifications, yaBB, VBulletin, Invision Power Board, IconBoard, UltimateBB, exBB, phorum.org, wiki. It breaks captchas and auto-registers with auto-activation as well.

The last feature I know is that it Pisses me off!

If the person contributes useful posts and continues to do so, I tend to leave sigs alone but I will not allow in-text links or promotional text even with good members. That has worked for me so far.

If I see any post that looks like topical spam (viagra etc get banned period) I ban the user for ten days with a note why and how they can carry a sig without being tagged spammer.

This is a little more time consuming, but I have gained some decent posters that way.

I used this plugin on a forum to stop spam getting through. It works very well so far.

I wish Akismet was available for forums too, it is superb, catches 99,9% of spam comments to my blogs.
And for a real satisfaction then I ban those spammers with one click, so they cannot even see my site any more. :kissass:
I know it can be dangerous if the spammers use proxy servers to hide behind and dynamic IPs, and later a normal user would come to the site from that IP, but oh well… You cannot get everything.

Askimet is compatible with vbulletin (see http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=118421 ) although it didn’t pick up any of the spam that was posted on my forum :-(

I woke up this morning to find out my vbulletin forum was attacked last night by 75 new signups posting porn, but I have an easy removal hack and just deleted them all in one swoop as well as banned them. :D

Now I have the moderation hack on so that I don’t have this problem. It’s a pain, but way better then my members seeing that crap at my forum.

    We have been attacked too
Spam bots can read now standard verfication imgages from vbull
and they can verify the confirmation e-mails

We did now install a new registration verfiy thing
    found on vbulletin org
we have now 1st an img verification but not one with letters
and then they must answer a question
its great you can easy edit/change the question
    I will do that weekly

I will also add the min. post required before users may post a link

    Thanks much BP :)

I’m still under attack and it’s getting old. I will have to turn off my member registration when I go to bed tonight if it continues.
