First European lottery set to go on Friday the 13th

PARIS (AFP) – The first western European lottery is to take place next month in Britain, France and Spain, officials said, with fans of the game of chance hoping next Friday the 13th will be their lucky day.

For a wager of two euros (nearly 2.50 dollars), fifteen million euros (18.6 million dollars) will be up for grabs every Friday in “Euromillions.”

The first drawing will be in Spain in two weeks’ time, on Friday, February 13th, if Spanish officials give the final go-ahead.

The French lottery said Friday that gamblers would have to choose five numbers and two stars — with numbers hidden under the stars.

To up their chances of getting rich, participants can choose up to nine numbers and/or nine stars for each lottery coupon, or have a computer pick the numbers for them.

If no one wins the jackpot in any of the three countries, it will roll over to the following week.

The new lottery will be jointly run by Camelot of Britain, Francaise des Jeux of France and Loterias y Apuestas del Estado in Spain.

Camelot, the private consortium that has run the British lottery since it was founded in 1993, said last September it aimed to eventually organize a pan-European lottery.

Several Nordic states already hold joint lotteries, while officials in Australia, Canada and the United States are mulling the introduction of a multi-country lottery.

The world record for the biggest ever jackpot was in the United States in December 2002, when one winner in the multi-state Powerball lottery walked off with a prize of nearly 315 million dollars.
