This makes me itch to buy it:

Apple – iPad – Features – The best device for web, email, and photos.

anyone have any thoughts about it?

Actually it’s meant to replace netbooks. And it has one version that comes with G3 phone connection. It does do music, movies and books, but it is mainly for internet use. The keyboard is full size like the better netbooks have.

It does everything a netbook/laptop does, but with much greater capacity than netbooks and 10 hour battery life.

It intrigues me mainly for travel – laptops are a pain to lug all over, and the netbook I have is a lot better but somewhat awkward to use.

I like the touchscreen, it beats scrolling on laptops, I have always hated that.

I have an ipod touch but pretty much ended up using it only for music, the internet is too troublesone as it it just too small.

This thing is big enough – 9 1/2 inch screen or so.

    Not only that :
    – it has no USB port for a memory stick
    – no storage card port
    – no 1080p playback (HD)
    – no video out port (although you might be able to dock and produce VGA)

It doesn’t support flash (Apple hates flash – it isn’t theirs!), it doesn’t even multi-task (running iPhone OS 3.2) .

The only thing going for it is that it’s a good idea, and it’s got the apple badge so initial fanboy (and fangirl) purchases will produce revenue, so it probably will remain as a product going forward.

However, I’ll wait until version 2 or version 3 when apple have acknowledged that they need to play with the wider IT world and provide a consumer gadget with basic connectivity.

Ok, no USB port is a deal breaker for me. I need that.

I sure hope it is a precursor of some others like it that do have the usability this one lacks.

But whatever it may and may not have, if I were to use it for travel, no USB port makes it next to useless.

I can see some limited uses for it, mostly for people who don’t uses computers for anything more than entertainment. I’m a big Apple fan, but not all that impressed. Would have been impressed if they would end their ridiculous ban on Flash and had included multi-tasking. Multi-tasking is the big killer. Can’t listen to music while checking your email, or surf the web while composing an email.

You can connect USB devices, but you will need a rather large adapter to do so.

When I travel, all I do pretty much is check various mail accounts, crunch statistics, make some notes about who I talked to and what we arrived at, look at my sites to make sure updates etc are happening as scheduled, and check the message boards I moderate.

So it’s not heavy use and I usually only go to conferences. My little netbook does fine, but I am not happy with the display, my eyes are getting old I am afraid. And while it says it’s battery lasts 8 hours, it only lasts 5. Door to door most trips are like 24 hours, the longest ride in one plane being 11 hours.

I do use USB memory keys to carry various stuff with me that I don’t want to keep updated on the little book.

So my requirements for that purpose are not that huge, and storing a book in there to read on the plane, and perhaps a movie and of course my music would make it a convenient, small, lightweight little gadget I can stick in my purse for travelling. Everything in one place, now I carry a book and the net book and an ipod…

So how big is this USB connector and how easy is it to connect?

Just ordered the Kindle and saw the release of Ipad and was bummed. But the more I researched I am glad because I want it to read and all my research says the Kindle has the easiest on the eyes and we have limited Internet features here.

Also the 6″ screen will work fine for me. Hey Dom not sure if you know but lots of airlines have power plugs in something like every 3 rows all thru the airline. They do not promote but on AA for example right next to the button to release the above lugagge storage you will see a power symbol informing you that there is a power outlet in your row, just below the armrest. need a special airline power cord but they are easy to find.

    Take care all,
    Brian

I didn’t know they had power outlets, I never noticed them on United. I’ll have to pay attention.

I think I’ll hold off until all verdicts are in, and wait for a later edition, or something similair non-apple shows up. I’m not much of an apple fan except for the ipod for music.

It is a great idea though, but for my purposes needs USB and multitasking is also an issue since I tend to have a lot of windows open at the same time…

The iPhone does everything it does, and it fits in my pocket! As far as competing with netbooks, it will never truly compete until they implement multitasking.
