I just have a different opinion on the subject than you. I don’t what to be offensive or ignorant but check your database.
It is a nice theory that you put forth I find it interesting but highly unlikely. If this were true I quess all my stats for all my affiliates are wrong because of bots. But to find out for sure, when I get around to it I will restrict bot travel to just content. It will probably hurt my site a little, but I am willing to do it.greek39
Hey … re: ping in our database -> you very well might be right. I have never said that wasn’t the case. You are not being ignorante or offensive and your feedback is welcome … we are looking high and low to sort this out as this thread evolves – including our internal setup (queries, sp’s, housekeeping, etc).
As for my so called ‘theory’, I don’t believe it’s a theory I think – at least to my understanding – that is how it works. Affiliates are the SEO experts … help us out … is my example in line with your SE bot knowledge??

If they truly wanted to fix it they could easily do so and it wouldn’t take years to figure out, hell they already say they know what’s causing it, so ask yourself why havent they done anything in the years this has been an issue. It’s not rocket science. No we don’t … we are actively trying to figure it out. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to locate the source/cause yet. Why on earth would I want this to be happening on purpose?!? It’s Saturday in Australia and I’m in here … c’mon!

I thought you stated it was robots/spiders hitting on links? Don’t know the source? Ahoy, AlkalineBOT, Anthill, Appie, Arachnophilia, Arale: Finding a list of robots is quite simple to do.
Actively trying to figure it out? Come on now; how in the world can you say that when its been going on for numerous years? Surely its time to start firing some people if they actually have been on this issue actively all this time.
Maybe Rewards should take a vow if its not fixed by March you and/or your IT team will resign?

December 11, 2005 at 4:37 pm #678353AnonymousInactiveI would like to see the answer to this too, but there is no reason to be all this agressive. Let’s keep this on a business like tone.
I am not happy with the stats either, although my downloads are in tune with the clicks, if anything I would expect more downloads. Maybe it’s the way I present the properties – some of which have “no deposit” offers, but I rarely get any second deposits.
December 11, 2005 at 8:15 pm #678356AnonymousInactiveI think this thread has been fairly respectful but I think frustration is bound to set in when the responses from CR are inconsistant. Given that are we supposed to sit back and just swallow what we are being fed?
I for one think it is important for affiliates to challenge, especially concerning this particular situation.

December 11, 2005 at 11:39 pm #678360AnonymousInactiveHi All,
Re: Stats … total separate issue, but there was a run-away process which a table level lock and that kept some of reports from being updated. If you check now you can see your stats are there as expected.
re: been going on for a few years. ?? I have only been aware of this issue [inflated clicks/downloads] for a couple months and can trace it back to about July/Aug 2005.
Re: inconsistent CR replies. How are we inconsistent? We have agreed there is a problem with inflated clicks/downloads. We are actively trying to fix it. We agree everybody is getting credit as expected, but appreciate that affiliates shouldn’t have to put up with the extra clicks/downloads. One of the theories we had while trying to figure this out is that the inflated clicks and downloads might be caused my SE bots. Some affiliates have been good enough to test this theory with us and that is evident here in this thread.
As for calls of resignation, we are talking about a few extra clicks and downloads here … not affiliates getting ripped off, not lack of support, not poor business ethics. My personal take is that you either don’t understand the situation or are unwilling to. No offence intended, but you are so far off the mark [elephant gun to kill a fly, mentality] that I can only conclude some of the fundamentals are missing on this one.
December 12, 2005 at 12:12 am #678362AnonymousInactivefew extra clicks and downloads here
So you are saying these numbers are very low?

How do you come to that conclusion after reading all of the posts here?
December 12, 2005 at 12:53 am #678366AnonymousInactiveRe: bots causing downloads…
Just to recap, since some still have to yet grasp this.
for the record, I’m explaining this based on FACT – not my opinion.
Also, please keep in mind that I am not trying to sell you on how this works – this MAY or MAY NOT be the reason for the inflated clicks & downloads… I am merely trying to help you understand how this can happen and why it is worth considering as a possible culprit for the inflated clicks/downloads.
Maybe it will help if I explain first how it might work the way some of you guys are thinking – keep in mind I have been trying to explain that is possible … not that it is always the case.
Here goes:
Some download links call webinstallers which prompt for an email address … it is likely in this situation that once the user submits the email address via the webinstaller dialog box they the webinstaller calls the query/sp to increment the download count – in this situation a SE BOT could NOT cause a download … because the bot isn’t going enter an email address and click submit.
However, as I have been saying … depending on the web installer – you guessed it, one that doesn’t have an interactive aspect to it (like asking for an email address), CAN cause an increment in the started download. So, to reiterate, bot follows download link … download script increments counter … then starts to send .exe.
Hope this helps

I have just had a 3rd party SE consultant review my post and confirm that IS how the bots work. If anybody wants to argue, please put forward an educated argument, so we can actually discuss it) as opposed to the ‘your wrong because I said so’ style of reply.
