If things go according to schedule, the U.S. Congress will hold a tax hearing on online gambling this Wednesday. So, on the one hand, this issue has had quite a few false starts, so it’s hard to really put much stock in news like this. On the other hand, with media and politicians generally spending more time talking about this, it does feel like something could really happen here … but whether that would be bad or good depends on your perspective. I’m really not sure why they would do this now. There is going to be too much opposition going into the mid-term elections….i.e., many in Congress won’t consider supporting such a bill, because of their fear that its support will hamper their re-election bids. This is a political hot-potato, that needs to be introduced during “benign” times. I applaud the effort; I totally disagree with the timing of it.

I’m not so sure, Poker Dude … it seems like most taxpayers aren’t as fearful of the idea of online poker as the politicians like to assume they are. At any rate it’ll definitely be interesting to see what comes of this so-called “hearing” — if it actually makes an attempt to move the issue forward or not. (I’d kind of bet on “not”.)
