Just wanted everyone’s thoughts on buying and selling links?

I vaguely remember Google saying its not a good idea to sell links on your site and you could be penalized for it.. but.. we still buy and sell links.

I think its ok to do it..

Since you are paying for them, can be risky, especially if you get caught and penalized. The thing is, how would Google know it’s paid? Unless they endorse it with something like Sponsored Link, or something similar I doubt they can actually prove you spent cash on it.

From the “is it worth it” point of view, I am guessing, you have to check the increase in the earnings(if any), and compare them to what u spend monthly on that link, or links.

Bottom line, I am for it.

Out of curiosity do big sites sell links, someone something like CNN :)?

I think they sell AdSpace, rather then links for the purpose of trying to run a project to increase your sites in the SERPs.

I guess with my initial post, is it ethical for me to go out and offer people links to purchase?

I know many of those who are dominating google rankings spend thousands – tens of thousands on buying links. If Google was against this practice I wish they would start to penalize those who are doing it. At the same time I dont think its Googles place to tell you how you spend your advertising dollars.

Apparently, Google are against paid links and it is against their TOS.

Websites that mention “paid links” or have an advertising page that mentions paid links will be penalised and I think Google has an automated algorithm to detect such things. You probably will not get penalised buying them as you could just buy loads for your competioros. What will happen however is the links that do pass PR and anchor and are paid, if these sites get found out they will not pass anything on and render the link useless.

A site that links to bingo and sells TVs is a huge signal that the link is paid.
