I have a friend who started a website and even has a few clients. Now he doesn’t want to do it anymore and has offered to sell me his site for next to nothing.
He has been hosting it under my existing shared server hosting account, so I have access to it. All I need to do is purchase the domain name from him. How do I go about doing that? How do I get it in my name?

Find out where the domain is registered (as opposed to hosted – may be the same place). Whoever is the account holder log in and request a “domain transfer” which should be a menu option – although some places carefully hide it to try and put people off transferring away from them. The rest should be self explanatory. It will email authorisation codes and stuff.
