ST. LOUIS – Online gambling firm BetOnSports has asked to negotiate a settlement of civil and criminal charges for racketeering and fraud against the company, lawyers on both sides said in court Tuesday.
“What we are interested in doing is resolving this matter,” BetOnSports PLC lawyer Jeffrey Demerath told U.S. District Judge Carol Jackson Tuesday. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Fagan said he thought the case could be resolved, according to STLtoday.com, the Web site for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Federal prosecutors in St. Louis unveiled a 22-count indictment against BetOnSports in June for allegedly breaking the law by allowing U.S. customers to gamble and place bets over the phone and online.
Former Chief Executive David Carruthers, 48, remains under house arrest in a St. Louis suburban hotel awaiting trial on charges of mail fraud, wire fraud and racketeering. He and several other BetOnSports employees and associates were named in a federal indictment and have all pleaded not guilty.
