BetOnSports Update – Feds Get No Extradition or Cooperation
    July 20, 2006

The FBI came down to Costa Rica on Tuesday, July 18, 2006. They asked the Costa Rican government to permit them to seize the offices of BetonSports, Gary Kaplan, and other fugitives who had recently been indicted for various charges ranging from Bookmaking, Conspiracy, Racketeering to Fraud.

The Prosecuting Attorney in San Jose, Costa Rica told the FBI that these charges are not considered to be a crime over there and politely told them to screw off.

Frustrated, they left on their jet an hour later. According to a BetonSports executive, he told EOG, “Don’t be surprised to see BetonSports up and running soon.”

And I wouldn’t bet against it either.

Costa Rica has absolutely zero interest in seeing online sportsbooks taken down. Not sure of the numbers, but online sportsbooks employ several thousands of Ticos and Ticas. Having them all out of work would be a big blow to the their currently expanding economy…not to mention the well connected owners of these sportsbooks and the politicians they most likely support. It would be quite a surprise if Costa Rica bent over and let the U.S. do what they want regarding this.

I half expect Costa Rica to take the same tactic as Antigua and plead a case to the WTO.

Good. The US has to realize their laws don’t apply to the world.
