I read the survey as casino only, hence breaking even on net.
Airline tickets don’t pay much, but travel includes hotel, car rental, books, luggage, cruises, insurance and a bunch of other categories. I’d be building my site anyway, but from Randy said and what I’ve heard from another travel program manager, there is money there…

There’s nothing wrong with helping someone go on holiday though
September 17, 2004 at 12:47 am #655150AnonymousInactiveAn average travel affiliate will make next to nothing selling affair, a little more selling car rentals, and can potentially make a lot selling hotel rooms. The average commission per sale is much lower than what you would see promoting online gambling or some other lucrative industries, but if you do sufficient volume, you can make a very nice living indeed.
The thing about travel is that it’s such a deep and broad market with so many keywords to target.
There are only so many keyword phrases related to “online gambling” “online casino” “online blackjack” etc.
Travel has a boggling number of niches that you can target because there are so many destinations. Compared to “online gambling” phrases, there is minimal competition for some niche keyword phrases. A search for “hotels near the superdome in new orleans” only has 12,000 pages competing for it. New Orleans has several potential points of interest to me near, and so does every other major destination, so you can see how you could generate some fairly high ranking pages targeted at niches that could make money in travel. Especially if you don’t rely on PPC.

Since I live in a major resort destination . . Las Vegas, I also have a site dedicated to those looking to vacation here.
Doing OK with it, but not making the big bucks yet. Would certainly appreciate any further tips you may wish to share as to who you feel are the best people to affiliate with for this niche.
Thanks

September 17, 2004 at 5:11 pm #655180AnonymousInactiveRandy, I’d also love to pick your brain. My travel site is still in dev (getting ready for its friends and family alpha test), but beta and launch should follow quickly. Any insight on the industry would be greatly appreciated! Mind if I drop you a PM as well…?
September 21, 2004 at 10:53 pm #655279AnonymousInactiveRandy – What do you think of concert and sporting event tickets?
September 22, 2004 at 12:29 am #655282AnonymousInactiveThis website is pretty new, i’m still waiting for it to be spidered by search engines. But if you’re looking for a central location to discuss travel affiliate programs it should work.

Randy – What do you think of concert and sporting event tickets? You know, I haven’t really thought about it before you brought it up, but I seem to remember trying to get some concert and sporting event folks to sign up for our travel program. And they weren’t interested because they were making a lot of money.
(Had the same problem with gambling webmasters I was trying to recruit too.)
