I thought “canonical issues” were that you used both the http: and the http://www for your site?
Seems to be a broader subject then…
January 4, 2010 at 3:24 pm #806954arturs.vitolsMemberIt is my understanding that the term canonical in regards to websites includes anything where there might be more than one URL with the same content. That can include http:// v https:// or www. v non-www as well as any session ID issues.
You can fix any www v non-www issues in Google webmaster tools, but session ID fixes have to be done this way.
January 4, 2010 at 4:43 pm #806962James_WMemberhmm
firstly, it would help if the guy in the video could pronounce canonical
secondly, it would help if he pointed out that canonical is only a “hint”.
thirdly, the canonical hint is only currently supported by google, altho bing claimed they supported it.Not sure why the poster is trying to re-invent the wheel.. that vid was pretty bad.

1. I think I did ok, maybe my accent had an influence on it ?
2. In correct, but might take time for it to take effect, not sure how you meant hint.
3. Also incorrect Bing and Yahoo now support. Not reinventing the wheel passing along info to those who need it.

1.hehe maybe accent, I hadn’t had my morning coffee, maybe that one was a bit below the belt, sorry.
2, hmm, you don’t know what a hint is, and you make the video regardless. this has got to be bad no?
3. bing and yahoo don’t both support it.. bing claimed to support the hint but actually doesn’t.FWIW , heres’ a video from matt cutts explaining the hint properly.
as I said, no point re-inventing the wheel (badly) when you can link to a good video covering the topic correctly.
your sunglasses are better than matt’s invisible sunglasses though :hattip:
January 4, 2010 at 5:24 pm #806966arturs.vitolsMemberthat Cutss video is old and he is known for misleading people. When he was talking about that, the main issue they were addressing was the whole www v non-www thing. From my experience with some of the top SEOs I would say CasinoJack does a good job at addressing the issue in a minute for those curious people short on time.
Of course if you have an hour of free time, you can get more in depth elsewhere. Here is some more info and a good place to start: Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Specify your canonical

well given the apparent gaping holes in his knowledge (above), I would say in this particular case that linking to cutts’ video is fine, and that his video is redundant. If you’re going to do something, do it right imho.

Thanks for the input, and would tend to disagree about the “gaping holes” in knowledge, but we are all entitled to an opinion.
While I agree Yahoo and Bing are behind , especially regarding cross domain canonical tags, I would say in the next quarter they will be supported by all 100%. there fore the coding you do today to prepare for the future is not a waste of time.
Again, in 60 secs is hard to get in all info but, the videos are meant to do what they did here, start a conversation. And of course SEO topics always have great debate. Thanks for watching and participating.
January 4, 2010 at 6:25 pm #806971James_WMemberyep good for debate for sure, and let’s hope all SEs do indeed support the canonical tag soon. interestingly and usefully, you can now use the hint across subdomains.
Also of note, the All in 1 seo pack plugin for WPress (seemingly everyone’s favourite CMS) supports this tag, saving a lot of hassle for webmasters.
keep the vids coming, I just thoguht this one missed a few key points, nothing personal, and of course thanks for sharing sir.
January 4, 2010 at 6:41 pm #806972arturs.vitolsMemberI think the trend is going to point towards these tags being used more. I bet this one becomes a sticky topic like nofollows though. When google first used those, everyone else followed. After years of SEOs debating it finally came out that google wasn’t using them quite like they said they were. IMHO if you can avoid having to use canonical tags by having proper structure, that is the best idea, but if not, using them is better than not.
I’m sure in 6 months we’ll know just how important they are.
