    I have been researching the affiliate sector over the past few months and it appears that the affiliate program model is on the decline.

    Do members here find this is a trend exclusively in gaming, or have they found it is happening in other sectors also? ie: merch, sportswear, collectibles.

    I would call this the Google and Instagram factor, where brands can do their own promoting much of the time, especially in the internet and social media space.

    Over to the forum…

    Yes, the affiliate business is on the decline IMO. It’s difficult to pinpoint why, but one thing that certainly isn’t helping is all the country by country segregation.

    You’ve got all these individual markets. France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, USA, Australia, on and on and on and on. It never seems to stop. This is really damaging the poker scene. Unlike casinos where most players are playing individually and not socially (live dealer games notwithstanding), online poker needs warm bodies at the tables. When individual countries segregate themselves from the global player pools, we end up in a scenario where there are less people at the games. Removing 100 players from one country for example doesn’t just remove 100 players from the player pool. It removes 150. Reason being that all the games and seats that those 100 people filled are now empty. Those partially filled games never fill up because recreational players tend to dislike playing short handed tables that are out of their comfort zone. As such, some players from other countries leave the poker room due to less liquidity. It’s a crappy cycle and I wish these governments would realize that all this nanny state crap isn’t working.

    Was revisiting some topics from the past, and this is still relevant.

    We’ve had some success in doing negotiations with a number of brands from other industries also who are happy to pay a flat free for guaranteed exposure for a 12, 23 or 36 month campaign, including front page of section and links incorporated in the articles. We’re still doing some of these for the gaming industry also, but more for other business sectors. What are other forum members finding to be the trends?

    Still plenty of opportunity out there.

    I think you’re onto something Greg, but it may not simply be a case of the companies ability to market directly to their potential customers.

    Affiliate programs have been going through a long term consolidation phase, so there’s less competition between different companies and more competition between the brands of the same company. I’ve seen that with gambling and other high margin affiliate programs.

    When you mention direct marketing through social media and such, it’s usually done via “influencers” or “clueless” people who would take $100 for $10,000 worth of advertising. My guess is, if the “influencers” were able to sign up to an affiliate program and earn a commission, they would do a lot better. But then again, it all depends on the influencer and their followers, you won’t get much bank from a million teenagers, I wouldn’t think.

    @cashmirrors
    – of course, there’s always opportunities, no doubt. But the amount of effort required to earn the same amount changes constantly. You know, some people would do almost anything to earn minimum wage in this world. Others aren’t happy with $1,000 an hour. It’s all relative.
