Hey guys
I was curious if there are any aff managers out there who have their own aff sites? If so, what industry and how are you going?

It’s something that I’ve thought of developing, but at the end of the day, I’m just too tired :tongue:
That being said, with all that I’ve learnt working in this industry the past couple of years, it could always be a good back-up plan if I get sick of the usual 9-5.

but….while I love this industry….I think I would have to pick something a bit more girly – I’d be tempted to do fashion/gossip/beauty/health sites:blush:

Yeah I started a project about 2 years ago just to see if I could ‘practise what I preach’… beauty … and it started making money out of nowhere so I redesigned the whole site which took about 6 months and have just relaunched it, and its making dribs and drabs here and there… not much, but its a start.. so thats why i asked.. thought it would be interesting to know who else is in the same kinda boat
I think it’s wise for an AM to dabble into the affiliate side of things. It truly gives you a broad perspective of what things affiliates look for in order for you to do your job better.
I am redeveloping a site that makes/made practically no money. I will continue to work on it in my spare time. As in investing, you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket. I believe that to be true with income streams.

Yes the “Put your money where your mouth is” is a great impetus – since we represent a variety of merchants in different sectors we are launching and developing a number of different kinds of portal sites. These are to serve the dual purpose of testing marketing ideas and also delivering players ourselves as part of our overall revenue stream. I think yo are in a lot stronger position as an affiliate manager if you know something about the mechanics of site development, SEO, and some of the other challenges that affiliates face. Also it helps to see what Banners etc. actually do draw attention, you can be a lot more confident making recommendations when you can actuallly see what outperforms other ads. I will be very interested to see how long it takes to get Return on investment, since we are in a position to keep these costs segregated from our other overhead I am keeping good track of this. I will keep posting on this..

Before I joined Paddy Power, I worked on a large number of start-ups both off-line and on-line.
So I have used the internet to sell everything from construction materials, specialised cleaning services, interior design, lawyers, heavy goods vehicles, electrical equipment and a whole host of others.
I have kept a few of the nice little niche sites I set-up over the years and make money from advertising and selling various products, (none are gambling related).
It keeps me fresh, on top of the trends and pays the mortgage
I believe online gaming pays the most commissions but the truth is if you are going to do a site on the side for a hobby and/or extra income it better be something you are passionate about. Actually I know of some affiliate managers who had/have their own gaming site and it probably helped them get the job. If someone needs to learn about this aspect of the business I tell them they need to make their own site, signup to all the programs and try it for themselves just to see both sides.

I was an affiliate myself as a hobby before being an affiliate manager.
True that it did help to get the AM role. This is a plus to know affiliates’ needs.I reckon i would now do much better should i create the time to set up some websites today :wink-wink ! I would certainly also be much more motivated when i see what some of my affiliates earn.
As of today i find the AM role rewarding and i enjoy it. But who knows, it could be nice to get back on the affiliate side one of these days…
