The Federal Wire Act of 1961
The Federal Wire Act of 1961 was originally introduced to shut down Mafia-owned bookmaking operations, and has been the most effective legal tool the DOJ’s ever had in the war on gambling. But ever since the Feds defanged the Wire Act in 1961 by approving pretty much every kind of online gambling except sports betting, the Act has become increasingly irrelevant.
These days, the Act is less of a threat to gambling than it once was, and just about everyone in the gambling industry would be happy to see it done away with entirely. Until then, it’s likely to remain the scourge of sporstbooks and American gamblers.
