Slight Increase in Online Gambling Unique Visits

August 18, 2008 (InfoPowa News) — The latest stats from com.Score Media Matrix, covering unique visits by U.S. Internet users to different categories of website, show that online gambling visits in July 2008 were slightly up over the previous month at 5 percent, placing the category around the halfway mark on a list of 10 top gaining categories.

In June 2008 there were 12,038,000 visits to online gambling sites, increasing in July 2008 to 12,648,000 despite the determined efforts of US enforcement agencies to discourage online gambling — except where it is excluded by carve-outs in the legislation (i.e., for horseracing).

Total U.S. top ten sites visits were 189,134,000 in July from Home, Work and University Locations, the organization reports, revealing that the biggest increase over the month was in travel, which despite tighter American economic conditions improved by 10 percent in July over the previous month.

The next most popular website categories in July were retail visits regarding consumer goods, mall and movies, which gained respectively 8 percent, 7 percent and 7 percent.

Top 50 properties were again led by Google sites, which maintained the No.1 position in the Top Properties ranking, reaching 141.6 million Americans in July, while Yahoo! Sites captured the second spot with 140.3 million and Microsoft Sites ranked third with 120.2 million visitors. CBS Corporation jumped 27 spots to No. 10 due to its recent acquisition of CNET Networks, which resulted in an incremental gain of nearly 30 million visitors to the property. Ask Network moved up two positions in the top 10 to No.7 with 58.6 million visitors.
